Hi,

Can anybody answer these two question:
Immediate management of a comatose hypoglycemic pt...
A) have pt. drink orange juice
B) IV infusion of 50% glucose solution
c) glucagon infusion(sc or IM)
D) B and C
E) A,B,c

Tight glycemic control is recommended:
A) elderly
B) pt with advanced disease
C) child under age 7 yrs
D) pregnant women

The answer to 1 question is E
For the second question,the answer is pregnancy.

A patient in a coma cannot and will not drink orange juice or he is at risque of having the orange juice in his lungs.
Answer is B.

the answer to the first one is iv 50%dextrose but if not able to get iv acess then im/sc glucagon but in a comatose i think both should be tried

the answer to the second is pregnany as poor glyceamic control will definately harm the metabolism of the fetus and as u know will lead to fetal macrosomia

woah! i'd like to know how u can give both gluc im/sc n' also 50% gluc.....it's one or the other.....
both managments are correct but u kant hav both, kan u? some1 explain

orange juice is out of question...comatose...

as for tight glycemic control...i agree, pregnant women

okay, the ans. is B....checked out harrison's...my bible....heheh

if pt's condit is serious : confusion/coma then u give gluc inf... up until the point he kan swallow
