Why?

(Kaplan p 391)

It's a stress hormone, it increases in excercise, trauma, exposure to cold, illness but not in starvation.

hmmm...I thought it would as it (along with Glucagon) induces the PEPCK hormone of Gluconeogenesis.raised eyebrow

actually it does'nt increase, but it's presence is absolutely necessary , as it has a permissive role to play along with glucagon, however during prolonged startvation (fasting of about 3 or more days) cortisol does rise to significant levels, which mobilizes fats with it's subsequent conversion into ketones.

also among the four counter-regulatory hormones of hypoglycemia, cortisol has the lowest threshold in terms of level of glucose.
