Hi All
it feels great to be in the midst of so many travellers headed towards same destination.It is my contention that sailing becomes smooth and pleasant if we all support and complement each others efforts.
I am an Indian doctor and plan to take up USMLE step 1 in 2006.I did my graduation in 1980 followed by MD in Micro as well as Dermatology.I would be really thankful to get fedback from the members of the forum as to how much time on an average does it need to get thorough with syllabus and which study resources to follow.
In addition i wd like to know if there is any racial bias in USA as far as residency allocation is concerned

Join the club !
The material you need:
-kaplan notes(7+qbook)
-FA(first-aid)
-Goljan`s path.audio lectures(free on www.coolgoose.com)
-Goljan`s notes or 100pages high yield notes.
-kaplan q-bank(needed after 2nd reading)
-simulated kaplan cd-at the end of preparation to practice and assess yourse.
-if possible/affordable,buy kaplan DVDs(PIRATED dvds sold on ebay).
You need above mentioned material+planning+motivation+efforts/devotion to ace the exam.
Now,study strategy is:
Actually,first reading--just to know the contents of all books.
Second reading--to understand basic mechanisms.It is better to work on mneumonics while doing 2nd reading. After that, doing kaplan q-bank in detail-tutorial mode.
Then doing third reading. Now this third reading makes lot of sense. If time permits, repeating q-bank one more time or doing qs from other sources.
Now, time comes to read FA, HY notes&revision of weak areas, simulated exam(time mode)------writing the exam.
This is the standard strategy of study.We have to manipulate according to our time/study style etc.
So,first collect the material, plan for study, register for step and keep studying till exam. We all are doing the same.

As far as racial bias, thats almost like a joke in a country that would literally manufacture racism.
For example some states still honor the confederate flag which has always symbolized oppression and racism.
And some hospitals only hire American medical grads. but sometimes rules are broken if you are a real stand out!
