i have this dilemna. i will phrase it in the form of a multiple choice. btw i have 3 interviews in psychiatry (us citizen, img, 1 us lor, informal shadowing here, helped edit published book, informal research, volunteered for katrina.) I applied to 127 or so programs in psych. A univ program in lubbock texas and and 1 univ program in hartford, conneticut and 1 community prog in farmington conneticut. i haven't taken step 2 ck yet. please pick a or b.
a) take ck on dec 27th and go unprepared. i am averaging 54% on uw about 2/3 done. i have taken nbme 1 and 2 about 5-6 weeks ago and got 310 and 320. i had to take 3 weeks off for step 2 cs so that is why i am unprepared. expected score date: jan 18.
b) next available date to take step 2 ck is on jan 17th. i believe i will be still officially be in the match. most likely my score will come in 3 weeks. (jan 17 is a tuesday. i believe it comes out 3 wednesdays after ur date. and ecfmg cert comes withing 10 days.) but i feel my score will be better. expected score date: feb 1st.
a friend of mine got both of her results in 6 weeks. one was due to technical difficulty at the exam. one there was no incident. i heard this is rare.
my question: will choice A generate any more interviews than choice B? i plan on taking another nbme soon and that will be my deciding factor. if choice A will not generate any more interviews and if score below 400 i will postpone it. if choice A is better than i may take it earlywith a score of 380.

i think choice b i better,atleast u can get good scoes atleast.goin by choice b,jan 188 i guess is v late for sending interviews.but in the end,its ur choice.good luck

go for choise b,get great score and increase your chance.I think that low score can be a problem.

thanks for ur input. a lot of people i know who are close to taking step 2 ck are not even going for this match. some even say sit out 1 year, do some real usce and then reapply next year. but i dont want to sit out another year.

Sga430, I would go for choice b, and why not try to apply for this year??, if you dont succeed on it, then you get some usce, but I would encourage you to try to get in this year.! why not?

B definately. what is the guarantee that u will match this yr?? better get a good score than anything and everythin else. pls dont forget that if u get a bad score - the ppl who have offered u iviews might consider u a weaker candidate and put u down in rol.
also my belief is that not many ppl test for step1 and ck during this time period - so u shud be fine with ur results. also u need ur results by match day to be ranked - so technically even if u take the test in feb ur ok. pls balance optimum preparation and early test giving with emphasis on optimum preparation.

B for sure.
You should boost your NBME scores way over what they are now.
Make sure your medical education credentials are verified ASAP so that you will be eligible for ecfmg certifcation immediately after you ur results are in. you don't really have to actually be ecfmg certified to participate in the match. Fullfilling the requirments for certification is good enough.

i postponed it.   well i am relieved in a way. my score will probably be out 1 week after my interviews. any advice? will the pd get the score b4 me??

yeah the pd will get ur scores before u dont worry. everybody postpones. better to fight a tactical battle when ur ready rather than wage a senseless war when ur not. i postponed my step1 five times!!! ppl around me even started to make a joke about it - but it doesnt matter. and if ur score is good (which i am sure it will be) the pd will recieve a timely reminder just around the time of ur thank u note

my score will be out 1 week after my last interview. it should either be out around feb 9th. the rank order day is feb 22. i know this is cutting it close but i hope it is ok. thanks for ur help.
