Hi all, It seems that going to a program for 2nd look confirms the candidate's interest and they tend to rank those candidates much higher. My question to you all is..... How often do candidates go for 2nd look. Is is that common? Is it not enough to perform well during interview and write a good follow up letter? How many of you guys are planning on going for 2nd visit to the programs you are keen on. Plz reply.... Any suggestions or opinion will be appreciated!

Taking a second look is only if you have a confusion regarding the program, if you found things that you saw on the day of the program hard to beleive or may if you want to decide regarding a prematch. Most good programs rank you if they are interested in you. They do not need any confirmation from you that you are interested in them. Actually the pd of a very prestigeous program told during her talk that they dont give any extra points forthose coming for second visit. She told that they may come for second visit only if we did not trust whatever we saw during the interview. But that was an experience from one program and individual programs may differ.

I'm using my second looks, to get a feel for a program on a normal day, and to let my husband take a look at the area. and only for the my top 3 programs so far. Sometimes it's hard to decide from your top choices and you might have some more questions you hadn't asked and what not. I dont think it's a necessity

A second look at my program is just that - you will come in, be assigned to an intern and basically spend the day shadowing the intern and team. There is no other interview. If you stay for conferences, you might see one of the staff that interviewed you.

Affect on ranking? It shows that you have an interest in the program - it may (or may not) bump you up several points on the match list.

This is just my program - I don't have a clue how other programs work.

Thank you Drmanu, Diahuq, Dr_apurva and bbb, for your inputs and opinion. I am sure it will help me n others as well, in deciding whether they need to visit a program 2nd time! Thanks again.
