What would happen to the tidal volume if the vagus nervers were cut? and also the intercostal nerves? Since emphysema reduces the elastic recoil of the lungs, which respiratory air volums would this affect? How/Why?

all right first of all. Cutting the vague nerve and the other ones will produce a restrictive syndrome, which means that all the volumes will be affected the static and the dynamic ones. as for the emphysema, the residual volume will be increased, the total lung capacity may be slightly increased and the dynamic volumes will be decreased because of the air trapping caused by the reduced elastic recoil. This is caused by the altering of the point of equal pressures.

how does cutting the vagus nerve effect tidal volume? i thaught tidal volume is the result of changes in intrapleural pressure caused by contraction of the diphram (mainly)during inspiration which creates a -1 alveolar pressure that draws in 500 ml of air to return zero. as for recoil isn't it determined by surfactant and the lung i collagen and elastic fivers!!!does the vagus effect these????
