To get the statement of need you need to have passed the mccee exam - I spoke with Lewis- at the offices of MCC - and they WILL NOT give the SON without the MCC. If you have passed that it also depends on the province you're in - each is different - perhaps if you give me a few details I can tell you more or you can PM me. I'm in the same boat - only I'm a year away yet - so did some research.

Cordmd,

Thank you so much!!

I know that I have to write and pass the MCCEE in order to get the statement of need. I have scheduled the MCCEE for january 12 2006. I am know in Edmonton, Alberta.

Can you please elaborate me??

You can also email me @ redenggo@yahoo.com

I emailed you this and then thought in case you're more on the forum than on email - I'l cut and paste here. Hi Sorry - I did'nt check the forum for a few days Theres a lot of controversy re SON. Docs I know here say its almost imposs to get it from AB. You need to approach the Dean of U of C or grey Nuns CEO etc, who will put your name forward. Unlike some Eastern provinces - in Alberta a governing body has to forward your name. Look, I'm a really old graduate so have different problems as well, if you're a new grad there are ways of getting it from other provinces. Also, The son of the Doc I did an observership with in Calgary personally knew about some hospitals in Ontario ( sounds complicated I know but networking however complicated seemds to end up in info so ....) - he faxed and phoned them and managed to obtain a SON - but had to sign a contract to work with them after his res. He did that in NY and then requested he be allowed to withdraw from the conditiond of the contract and is now doing a fellowship in Pulm - in the US. So maybe its not that binding. BUT - he nearly missed his prematch becos after all that - he could not get the SON from Calgary. Did you accept yours? If you have you'l need to hustle on it. I heard also - that the Fort McMurray Health Region is really short on Docs and are more open to negotiations. Please keep me posted on how it all goes and Best of Luck!

Dear cordmd,

Thank you for your reply.

The dilemma is killing me. I didn't sign the prematch offer yet. I just wanted to be sure about the statement of need first. I am a little confused here. As long as we fullfill the required documents for the statment of need, on what basis could they deny it to us?? Can you please point me out which requirment is difficult to fullfill?? The following are the required documents for applicants under category B according to the health Canada website:

1-Proof of permanent residency or citizeneship =====>I am permanent resident of Canada hence I fullfill this requirment.

2-A certified copy of a document from the Medical Council of Canada confirming a passing mark in the Evaluating Examination =====> I will take the MCCEE in January and will hopefully pass it.

3-For medical specialty training programs of two years or more in duration, provide a letter from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada indicating that the clinical training program in the United States would be recognized in full or in part to the extent that the content of training satisfies the College's training requirements======> The program which I got prematch at is ACGME accredited and hence it will be recognized in full or in part by the RCPSC.

4-Provide a copy of a letter of an offer for a residency training position, or a residency training contract, from the clinical training program in the United States. =======> I already have the offer.

5-Provide a signed application form and two copies======> I will fill up and sign the application form.

6- (i) Provide an individual letter from yourself to Health Canada identifying the application as Category B. All applicants under Category B must make a formal written request for provincial endorsement from one or more of the participating provinces through Health Canada for the intended medical specialty======> This is the requirment that I couldnit understand. Can you please clarify what this??

-(ii) Provide a practicable plan that ensures your training will meet the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada's Objectives of Training and Specialty Training Requirements where the length of the residency program in the United States is shorter in length by one or more years than the College's requirements. =======> IM residency is 3 years in the US but 4 years in Canada but I can say I will do one year of fellowship in the US or I will work one year as a chief resident and that will count and it will be taken as a 4 year residency.

The other requirments are optional. So, except the requirment under 6-1 whose meaning I couldn't understand, I will be fullfilling all the other requirments for the SON. On what basis could then they deny it to me. And what do you mean by "Some body has to forward your name??". Isn't that I apply directly to Ms Judith Lewis??

CHECK YOUR EMAIL TOO.
