Hello,
i wanted to know tht gving USMLE Step 1 in 3rd yr is a better option or after final year?if any1 of u hv given it in 3rd plz share ur xpreinces with me...

i took my USMLE step1 after completing basic sciences which comprises of four years, but before my final year and i scored 99/254 ; so don't let anyone get u into believing that it cant be done...

tell us where r u from?? is that some one of your seniors did it or not, or some one in your class fellow is with you. You can take better suggestion from students who are ahead on you. But I can suggest you that, you can read those books which are recommend for usmle in FA in your school, but, when to give exam, I'm not sure.

i m student of DOW MEDICAL COLLEGE....recently did my 1st yr....result is also out and ALHUMDOLILAH passed thm....now about to start with 2ndyr....i wanted to know ttht whether i shud give my USMLE in 3rd yr or after final yr.....will i hv more chances of supply???or i hv more chances of getting low scores??coz i dun wana risk...i wana hv decent academic result as well as goood scores in my step,.....wht u ppl will advice me???shud i work on step 1...in 3rd yr or not??or concentrate just on my studies....???n give my full concentration to step after final yr??i dun wana hv risks......waiting for ur support ppl....n adivces...

hi, nice to know you are from DMC, i am a final yr med student from SMC, and congrats for passing!
well first of all you need to know that u cannot take USMLE until and after u clear ur fourth year, as one only gets eligible after completing all the componenst of basci sciences.... so for the moment i suggest u to collect as much info as u can about this exam, don't jump intoi anything before knowing the concenred details.... and once u make up ur mind u can start ur whole process of learning in a way that is effeicient for both ur upcoming MBBS exams and USMLE.

as for the study materials read ur text books very thoroughly and try to avoid taking short-cuts as u have loads of time, pay special attention to physiology section as it is one of most high yields of all!
if u need any guidance or any help regarding study materials, don't hesitate to ask!

ssrpk is right,dont make short cuts,study throughly ,study from textbooks to clear concepts ,bcz if u have concept then u can apply urs knowledge.ssrpk gives u very good advice.but another easy study stretegy is also there.the stretegy is to study like most of US students,the best advantage of this stretegy is that it will not disturb urs acedemic years study with little hard work(they study for just 6 weeks and pass and even score.for this check forum www.studentdoctor.com and another website www.alphaomega.alpha.com
US students use first aid from ist day of there basic years,and focus on HY topics in first aid and study more in details these topics in detail in there textbooks to clear concepts(if u only cover all topics of first aid in text book u can pass)they also study BRS(board review series)for patho and physio,study MMRS for micro and short ketzung or lippincort for pharma and lippincort for biochemitry during ist 2 years and then just prepare (revise again these review books) for 6 weeks after basic years and pass.US students are not so geniuses or other world creatures but it is there study methods,examination system and excellent teaching methods(teachers there give more empphasis on these diseases and topics(these topics and diseases are about all in first aid)which are commen in america.as u have so much time u can do even better than them.just be relax ,u have so much time ,during urs holidays study for this.but dont take tension from very first day.GL

hi misbahabban,ssrpk scored really well and what he says is right.he is experienced fellow.but misbahabban keep in mind many students follow different study stretegy to pass and score.the best stretegies are used by Us students.the stretegy which makes u feel relax,u dont have to become book worm,and u can continue urs social life easily.what they(US) do that during their ist two years(which is equilent to ours four years)that during semister preps and during their vacations and during there course work they consult review books for usmle and esp consult first aid.as a result with a single patern of study(study for thier college exams and usmle exams at a same time)they pass easily both thier college exam and usmle exam.and now what we pakistani and indians do,we consume atleast 7 years to become doctor and then after house job many of doctors consume 1 more extra year for just preparing step 1.it is difficult after graduation u study the basic materials when u already forgot every thing,and hard work for whole complete one year is not an easy task.this test is based on format which completely favors US students(that is why more than 90 % of US students pass each year)so follow US student study stretegies to take the advantage.again check www.studentdoctor.com and www.alphaomegaalpha.com may it helpfull to u

i think that misbahaban had previously asked similar type of question from u .kingsofki u are also guru like ssrpk both scored in 99 percentile.as a pakistani we are proud of u.i didnt take the test yet(sorry to misbahaban that i advice u(misbahaban,)but i havnt exam experience and in presence of these gurus like ssrpk and kingsofki i feel gustakhee but what i told u is reality and the information which i got during one month searching in google and searching in all usmle forums,searching for complete one month and i would have do the same stretegy as i advice u but i come to know about these information in 4th year). i aim to take the test this year(final year)so i seek advice from both of u gurus,that , can i cover it with final years study.also i have to start from absolute zero.i have a very poor performence during my basic years,already lost one year in second year,didnt take medical seriously but now i realised that i lost my precious time and thinking about my future.so plz give advice can i do it with final year.

though i m not giving my MLE this year....but getting help from such geniuses is always goood..its goood to stay intouch with theses adivces...which help u to make plans...

hey fakhan , thanks for the compliments, and ur advice is really great, if one plan to study this way, i am sure scoring high won't be a problem, and yeah take my word, there's no reason why it can't be done during final year, but as u stated u hv yet to start from the scratch and u are in the middle of ur final yr, so take my advice both are extremely important, but u have to set ur priority, so what ever u do, think carefully and once u make the decision, stand with it, trust me u can find help here, and u want to study for USMLE with comfort as it is very lengthy ,it's almost like mental marathon, but if u need any help u can contact me or my pal (kingsofke), actually he must be way ahead of me now, so i gotta take some advice myself.....
anyway good luck with ur prep., which college are u from?
and goodluck misbahaban with ur second yr and all!

thanx 4 urs reply .i m now not feeling alone to fight the battle against usmle after read urs post.u give me the confidence. i decide to do step 1 in august sept 2005,i m not in final year ,one and half month close to my 4th year exam.but in our college final year is of one and half year ,so i decided to dedicate 6 to 7 months for this.during this prep i will not take any class except some important wards(the wards in which attendence is not corrected by money)i m not a classroom person(lower than 5% atttendence through whole my medical life)so i can stduy full time .can i score highly by full time studying for 6 months.(i m from AMC,ayub med,coll,abbotabad)
i want to in contact with u ,i think most of the time u will be in step 2 forum.but it is the greatness of u that u come here to step 1 forum to help others specially pakistanis
