Thanks Rubensssss, it is very impressive. I am sure you will do it. And how long you have been studying like that? Which material do you use? Or you just trying to practice random questions? Good luck!

Hey Guys, Its very encouraging for me to know that there exist people who prepare for the USMLE with a full time job. I know what would be like for u guys. I work full time in a pharmaceutical firm and try to catch up with books once i'm home and also whenever I have the time in office. Why don't you guys post ur email ID's on this page and maybe we could prepare and enhance each other's performance. U could mail me at salads_man@yahoo.com Small suggestions could make very big differences. Looking forward, Salads.

Hello there, I am working full time, too, and studying for the USMLE in the same time. It is difficult, but we have to do it. I study every day when I came back from work for let's say 5-6 hours and I try to do more in the weekends. I wanna take Step 1 in May, and I am allotting 4 weeks for each subject (3 weeks for study and 1 week for review), with a 4 week final review time before the exam. I started quite some time ago, and then stopped for a few months and again and then stopped, but for the past couple of months I have done it really seriously helped by my new work place which is very close to my house (10 minutes away) and by my new work schedule (I get home around 1630). I am using Kaplan lecture notes, the BRS, the High-Yield series, and some of the Lippincott books, and of course review questions. Hang in there tightly, study hard, do the best you can, and you'll get there, it is not impossible. At times, you might get overwhelmed or totally freaked out (I know I did, and I still do sometimes), but get a hold of yourself and keep on studying! The best of luck to you all, A.

alot of us dont have a choice , we must work fulltime. I find that waking up one hour earlier and going to bed one hour later gives me at least 2 hours a day and of course i use my lunch break for another hour. During the weekend I can put in good eight hour days as long as you are consistent and perservere you will reach your goals. good luck docespy PS ;REMEMBER A WEEK HAS 168 HOURS FULLTIME WORK IS ONLY 40hrs. 50 hrs for sleeping and20 hrs for eating this leaves you with 58 hrs to study. no you dont have to bathe...

Sounds very encouraging indeed, guys! I did not start my preparation yet though we have a Kaplan course in Toronto. Some of my friends did it and already successfully passed a step 1. Unfortunately I can not afford it having a full-time job. I think I will start my preparation when I will get some literature. What would you recommend to read first? Sorry for a silly question and many thanks in advance for some advice.

Dude's, Yeah, its very much possible 2 crack step1 with a full time job. Kindly utilise every minute u can to prepare. It won't come back. 5 months with a full time job should be sufficient time to prepare but only if it's planned appropriately. Solve questions well. u may not get time for too many revisions. All the best to u guys. REMEMBER : USMLE IS NOT AN ENTRY PASS TO HEAVEN. Try not to give it a very gigantic outlook. Take each day at a time and u will make it. Hoping for the best for all of us, DON.

I work full time too. I used to work 40 hours a week, but my boss give me permission to work 30 hours a week because I still need the benefits (health insurance, etc.). I try study about 6 hours on weekdays and much more on weekends. I know it's very-very hard, we are in the same boat. I know your feeling. Ask your company if you can reduce your hours and still considered full time employee. My boss if very understanding after I explain to him about my situation. 40 hours it too much. But we have to do what we have to do. Good luck! I might take step 1 in February.

I notice that IT153 did not say if his friends who passed Step1 in Toronto had a full time job. Id say forget working full time because medicine and passing Step1 is a FULL time job.

mjl1717, you are absolutely right. This guy that I referred to, indeed, left a full-time job to have enough time to prepare for the exam. In fact, ironically, he "had a chance" to be fired at right moment and was eligible for the unemployment insurance. But he started to study a step 1 still being employed... Well, I feel I have to do the same... anyway my current contract will expire in May 2004.

It is the quality of the study time you set aside that counts. Make the one hour and thirty minutes count instead of thinking in terms of days and weeks. I work too and it seems impossible but so did med school. Good luck doctors and remember nerd stands for no one ever really dies.
