I took my Step 3 exam in November and www.nbme.org shows that they sent my score report. I am just praying god every minute to clear this hell of an exam.

My scores are 79 and 77 and I cleared CS. I did not get any interview calls (for peds residency)

any suggestions ? Do I need to wait more time, I am an IMG and want a H1. I am applying for 2006 residency match.

thanks

Perfect your english. Do research. Line up memberships to medical associations. Sign up for Med Journals. Read. Study at libraries in your local hospital. Attend activities that you will see posted. Do volunteer work related to your area. Work with children. Consider doing like a Masters in Public Health or any other thing related to Medicine that will show you a view of the American problems/system. Join Grand Rounds in your area of interest or Int. Med. at your local hospitals, etc. Call secretaries/coordinators of residencies and ask if you can do clerkships or if there are activities you can audit. If you see a conference you are interested in, call, ask the coordinators if you can attend without CME credits, for free. Go to the conferences, learn. Network.

You need to be seen. If you are from another country and it does not offend you or your faith to change your appearance, try to become more of an American. In example, if you are hindu, try to take off your sahri and try a pair of business pants/skirt or jeans, with a touch of your country too to make it special, to be proud of your heritage and to be more YOU, but try to blend a little. Find your new style. Let people in the hospital/university see you. Here, there... Make yourself an image. Fit in your new American doctor image. Play the role from now on, because that is your future.

In synthesis I would say that

-You need to network,

-You need to gain practice in your communication with whom will be your future patients and their milieu (parents, teachers, etc).

-You need to practice how to feel more American. You need to assimilate the culture.

All that will help you inmensely with your self esteem and with your future interviews. That will also make your curriculum more interesting. OK?

Do not let the failed opportunities to bring you down. They are just trials until you get what will work for you.wink

Ah! Connect with your higher power (I am a christian), with your spirituality, that will bring out the best of you. Do not forget that you are preparing to be a healer and THAT is a lot more than just learning about clinical approaches. Right? nod Moving into a new culture can beat us up...how can we heal others if we are a mess?

Do not forget that Medicine was an ART and that we DO BELONG to a FELLOWSHIP. You are NOT alone. Tap that potential. Even if you are flipping hamburguers or bartending for a living right now, do not forget who you are. Feel proud.

Good luck and all the blessings my felow Doc.
