Well, I'm an international pregraduate, from Egypt specifically. I've read the First Aid notes "Special Cases" on how an IMG can get a residency and work in the US. Here are the steps I've came up with,... Once I graduate, here's what I'll do:

In my country:

- Take Step 1
- Take Step 2 CK
- Obtain a B1 or B2 visa
- Travel to the US

In the U.S.:

- Take Step 2 CS [at one of the 5 locations]
- Apply for ECFMG --> Obtain the ECFMG certificate
- Take Step 3 [in one of the 13 states that do not require postgraduate experience]
- Apply for a full medical license --> Obtain the license
- Obtain a H1B visa
- Apply for Recidency (the Match) - thru ERAS
- Attend residency interviews --> get a job
- Take speciality board exam

Questions

- Are these steps correct?
- Will the B1/B2 visa permit me to stay in the US for more than 6 months? (as I guess it'll take a longer period to get these stuff complete)
- How exactly can I obtain a H1B visa? and how long does it allow me to stay in the US?
- If I take a full medical license, will I be eligible to stay in the US as long as I wish?

Any advice will be much appreciated

ur above STEPS are absolutely right.

about visa ...i think some countries give mutilple visa B1 fr 5-10 years.. but in my knowledge we can get only 6 month visa on port of ENTRY.

& after 6 month ,again u have to get renewal of 6 month entry ON SAME MUTIPLE VISA..thats wht i know but there maybe some other source..

hi hasook!

I'm not sure about the difference between B1 and B2 but you can know that from US immigration website.

I want to correct a few things in your list. After you write the step 3,u don't apply for full medical license before residency. It goes like this...

- Take Step 2 CS [at one of the 5 locations]
- Apply for ECFMG --> Obtain the ECFMG certificate
- Take Step 3 [in one of the 13 states that do not require postgraduate experience]
- Apply for Recidency (the Match) - thru ERAS
- Attend residency interviews --> get a job
- If you get a job in a program willing to sponser H-1 visa, they will sponser a H-1 visa for you.

- You will get a full license after you finish your residency

B2 is for business and B1 is for tourist...but B1/B2 is usually given because in whichever visa you try to visit some places and have fun...don't need to specify either B1 or B2......it's B1/B2....don't worry....they just stamp B1/B2 on ur visa....not a grt deal to think of...
good luck..

Apply for a full medical license --> Obtain the license

In many states you cannot apply and get a full medical license unless you have completed residency. You usually have to be accepted into a residency to apply for the license.

Good luck
