The only english speaking countries in europe are UK and Ireland. There are many IMGs who do their residency from these countries and/or give the royal college exams. For further information check their medical council websites.

Malaysian; Thank you for your response, I will check medical council websites. tocket; thank you for response , why does it take 10 years to finish a residency?is it impossible to get in to a residency , or they donot release your credentials soon after the end of residency ,, or it actualy longs 10 years? it is realy devastating to be a resident for 10 years. I am not asking your personal reasons but in general for doctors why ran away from europe?is life/work standard is so low there?. Thank you both, and GOOD LUCK.

i heard it's very tough to get into one, let alone the duration of residency!

It is very touph to get into one. Only through relationship which quet unfair unfortunately in EUROPE. If you are a lady; you have to be involved in a kind of girlfriend boyfriend relationship with PD to get into. If a male; you have to have a relative in the system to get into a Residency Program. When I did my Internship, I tried to get into, but no way! Beside the high cost of living and hostility against IMG bcz of all the Refugees from 3rd World Countries. The main reason is the HOSTILITY and DISCRIMINATION. Tocket

Hmmm.......I really do not know where you're getting all this info. but the NHS in UK employs ALOT of IMGs......and so does the Irish medical system. And who told you it takes 10 years for resideny????One can finish it in 3 years(and if you're really smart even in 2years). Regarding hostility and discrimination......I think its just as same as how its in the US. Unless you're referring to an eastern european country you may be true but whatever is written above is absolutely false when we're talking about UK/Ireland.I'm sorry to say but I absolutely disagree with all the above posts.

actually malaysian, I have alot of friends in the uk system right now, and some of them came over after investing many years there. The problem I heard is there is discrimination but it won't be blatant in your face, it's more like there is no upward mobility, once you get to a certain level(which is hard to get there in the first place) you are stuck. I heard that many Indian doctors that are established will help out some indians, but even then it is hard. So many people who take the plabs or even become registrars there end up coming here. Even though it is frustrating here at times, a fmg can become really successful in the U.S. No matter how much we complain about the opportunities we do have a more even footing in the U.S. we take the same exams. Many countries don't even have a system to allow us to get into their medical community.

in ireland from what ive seen, there are quite a few foreign grads here in SHO/registrar posts. Ive rarely (ive heard of maybe 2) heard of a non-irish consultant in an irish hospital. most stagnate at Specialist registrar level for a few years and decide to leave to return to their respective countries. this is contrary to what ive HEARD about in the UK where ive heard of foreign grads becoming consultants. but maybe theyve already gotten citizenships by then. as for specialising, its a matter of getting into a specialist training scheme in ireland. competition i heard is tough and there are limited spots. then you take the membership exams. it will only take 10 yeaers if you keep failing the exams. otherwish it shouldnt take more than 3 for medicine and further 3 for subspeciality. wages in ireland are a lot better than USA while youre training (about 30 - 50% more), but most likely you will only reach Specialist reg's position, not become a consultant. that could frustrate some people. there are also a few locum consultants ive met that are FMGs. this is my personal view of the opportunites in ireland.

If you are a lady; you have to be involved in a kind of girlfriend boyfriend relationship with PD to get into. Untrue,i agree jobs are difficult to get i dont see girls sleeping around to get jobs THAT'S BULLSHIT. If a male; you have to have a relative in the system to get into a Residency Program. THIS IS TRUE BUT ONLY PARTIALLY,even a relative cannot help you now,the job situation in UK is worse than ever for doctors, even local graduates are jobless. When I did my Internship, I tried to get into, but no way! Beside the high cost of living and hostility against IMG bcz of all the Refugees from 3rd World Countries. I agree there is discrimination but i sincerely belive people in UK are much friendlier and i have recieved much love and respect both as a doctor and a human being and an Indian and i respect their values as much as i respect Indian values ( except for 24 hour drinking rule which was recently forced into system). The main reason is the HOSTILITY and DISCRIMINATION. Lots of IMG's do end up in clinical posts BUT MOST OF THEM END UP IN NON CAREER GRADE JOBS AND ARE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST. Tocket
BUT TO SAY THAT PEOPLE SLEEP AROUND WITH BRITS JUST TO GET JOBS IS A TERRIBLE LIE.

I totally disagree regarding the discrimination. If they really discriminated against IMGs they wouldn't end up having a huge chunk of their own graduates having gone out of work as reported recently.Which is different in the US where more than 99% of AMGs get into residency......in this regard I find US more discriminatory. Ofcourse if you have a contact its easier to get a job......the same applies to the US.I know someone who got an interview call at a top notch institute in Pennsylvania in the current 2006 match all becoz her father had to talk to someone influential in the hospital. Also in the US the chances of getting an interview at a place you did externship/observershop and eventually matching there highest applies to UK as well, there is nothing different about UK and US in this regard. But getting a job via contact in UK is the only way is absolute rubbish.

approximately 2000 local graduates are jobless and the main reason for the same being that they apply in places like GUYS and MRI which are like top notch, not because they won't get job if they apply elsewhere,( not because these institutions are filled with IMG'S but because there r better qualified local boys working there)where as there are more than 14000 IMG'S without jobs some of them even with part-1 of membership, and to add salt to the wounds GMC is conducting PLAB evrywhere in India as if jobs are raining hell. Giving the jobs to their own graduates IS NOT RACISM/DISCRIMINATION,IT IS THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT OF THEIR GRADUATES TO BE PREFFERED OVER IMG'S FOR JOBS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY,AND I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR HERE THAT I DONOT DISPUTE THIS.

Judging that only 50% of IMGs statistically match in the US(which amounts to thousands of candidates each year) I still do not see the difference between the UK and the US.Atleast in the UK the candidate can do locum work which is not allowed in the US eventhough you've done the USMLE. I don;t think the reason why there are 2000 unemployed UK grads is becoz they only applied to GUY and MRI and found themselves jobless. Its becoz there were many many foreign docs who have taken up their spots.......ask any newly UK medical grad. that. One needs to understand that UK with a population of just 60million has absorbed so many foreign doctors and it may equal to the US which has a population of 250million. How much more can UK cope with if doctors still line up there from all over the globe?Blaming the PLAB isn't the solution........after all nobody blames the USMLE when more than 50% imgs don't match each year???? I think UK and Ireland have very open door policies and treat all foreign doctors equally just as how it is in the US.The only thing is that the system there is different(but in no ways inferior).

Dear tocket, sorry for harsh words,i apologise, but i felt that if u put all IMG females who are looking for jobs under one banner of ----- those sleeping around to get jobs i think that is an unrealistic estimate. Regarding me being smart,i dont know if am smart or not,but i need to tell u that i am working as a doctor in UK already, hope this clears the air. Dear malaysian,i agree with part of your comment that UK and Ireland have absorbed more doctors than when compared to its size, but have u seen what grades they r working at. > 95% of no career grade doctors are IMG'S-and less than 5% of consultants r IMG'S--and most of them r well qualified and qualified more than the consultants they work under.,where as > 60% junior docs r IMG'S. Ofcourse no one forces IMG'S to take PLAB,but till recently when association of foriegn doctors threatened to take GMC to court that they announced the paucity of jobs for FMg'S ,till then they misinformed/kept FMG'S uninformed about the situation in UK, and have u seen new GMC building built from all the money laundered from third world country IMG'S plab fees.?given that GMC was in rags before 2000. And who said UK treats all IMG'S same!!! european doctors dont need to take IELTS and PLAB,and as IMG@S asians are preffered last. I think atleast in USA they make their graduates take the same exam and compete in general pool. Anywayz these r my thoughts havin been employed in UK,but evrybody has got absolute right for his/her own opinion.and am not saying that the way i see things are right. cheers.

To tocket.....nobody is saying you're a liar......I'm sure you may have had a bad expereince and so wanted to share but in all honesty it does not acutally represent the true picture of the majority.......though your views and opinions are appreciated and noted. So please don;t take it in a negative manner if someone doesn't agree.......its all just a discussion. For Katzung.....just saw the small message at the end of each post you write.....very sweet and something I always do......I too pray that all beings everywhere to be happy and content. God Bless all.

It is good for you Katzung to be a Doc in UK. But tell me, why do you want to immigrate to USA? Stay where you are, in UK and practice practice practice medicine there if it is so great there till you are 60 y/o and still senior Registrar. Hope you got the point. Good Luck! Tocket

Dude it is not about beating someone in discussion if so it is not called discussion but is called argument which leads noone nowhere. It is about sharing right information,i just wanted to emphasise that Female IMG'S donot sleep sround with PD'S to get into residency in UK,though i agree i shud not have used harsh words to emphasise the same. Yes if i have come this far in UK with my abilities i can work thru the system and try and be among those 5% consultants ,i belive the training is good in USA and thats the main reason am coming there, and besides i want to experience evrything in life, whats wrong with that.?? i rest my discussion(not an argument) here. GL
