Kaplan Qbank USMLE

I just took step 1 today !!!

Well, time was the main problem for me . The questions were long , harder than in NBME .

I think the subjects were all very well distributed , but there were a lot os statistic questions , studies , bias , errors which I was not prepared for. Pharmacology was difficult , mechanism of actions from antidotes , receptors for valproic acid and many others . HEY GUYS , FA IS NOT ENOUGH FOR PHARMACOLOGY !!!! they give you a scenario with a disease and after they give you the option with the mechanism of action of the drugs , not the name os the drugs ,for example , a man with 45 years old , with blood pressure 150/94mmhg and no other abnormalities . What drug is appropriate to start the treatment ? After they will give you the mechanism of action of 5 antihypertensives . So, you need to know that the man has primary hypertension ,classify the range of blood pressure, know the appropriate therapy for mild hypertension and know the mechanism of action of this drug . If you have time , fine , but if you are running against time , it is another problem...

Physiology was not so hard .

Doctor and patient relationship was hard , the answers are very similar , but I think the secret is to do a lot of questions on this subject -Q bank is very good .

Pathology was doable , very beautiful questions , BRS and Goljan audio lectures are enough for it . I got a lot of questions in hematology , A LOT in calcium , p metabolism (related to calcium problems in all subjects - STUDY CALCIUM , VIT D , PARATHYREOIDS ) , collagen disorders and SKIN (do not neglect skin ) , so many questions about skin diseases !!!!!

Microbiology- VIRUS , VIRUS , VIRUS!!! more than 7 questions about all types of meningitis , but 3 questions just of viral meningitis . They give you the age , the symptons , epidemiology , and CSF fluid analysis and ask you the virus . Sometimes they ask you directly the name of the virus, but i had 2 questions that they gave the caracteristics of the viral group ( RNA , SS,negative , circular,...). So you need to know that it is a viral meningitis (they put bacterias in the answer) , the name of the virus and the classification. A lot of DNA -RNA polymerase , RNA-RNA polymerase , virology , modes o viral replication .

Immunology - study well the immunodeficiencies ,mechanisms of immune reaction -MHC I and II , interleukines .The questions were not so hard , very long , but not hard .

This is what I can remember now. I think the questions are not impossible , but when you have short time to answer them , they can get very difficult , when you read them too fast , sometimes you do not have time to think , so you have to guess and I am sure if you stop and think about it you will get the answer.

When I get my results , good or bad , I will write again .But my preparation was very hard , painful and i am feeling really upset because I made very silly mistakes and because I did not do well , how I was expecting . I feel that I had to guess too many questions , it was like a shot in the dark , I feel that all the questions I was in doubt I guessed wrong and they seem too many .

But I also want to thank this forum , I learned a lot from everybody . I hope I will pass, but If I don't this time ,it will show me that I was not really prepared for it ..

A message that I want to leave - This is not an impossible test , but it is not a test that you can read FA ,go and take a high score. The test can ask you everything and in specific details , so commit and study .

hey vic, don't be upset! It's over, and now time to relax, no matter what. Whatever the outcome is, it's for the best. Thanks for sharing your experience. Exam is hard, but I am sure you will do well. Did you practice many qs before exam?

  #11

Hi Vic

Did u do the nbme???

  #12

Oh guess u did,

  #13

Hello,

Thanks everybody . Yes it is true , now I need to relax a little bit .

Well i did NBME 1 1 month before the exam , scored 510 , kaplan simulated was 72% , Q BANK ( NOT EVERYTHING COMPLETED - 70.5% ) .

I think we just remember those questions we were in doubt or those we did not know it . I am praying , praying because just the idea to start all over again is too much for me , but if it is necessary I will do it .

later I answer the questions about the books .

But thanks again everybody!!!
