Dear BBB/whoever feels able to help. I'm new to all this, so if I'm asking a very basic question, my apologies. I'm in the process of taking Step 1 and 2 for USMLE from the UK. I wish to start a residency programme thereafter. It seems that if I were to obtain a J1 visa, I would be obliged to then work in an undesirable area for 3 years in order to then be considered for a green card. The advantage of the J1 seems to be eligibility to apply for a fellowship programme. Does one need a new tyupe of visa at that point? The advantage of the H1B visa seems to be that it can more easily be converted to permanent residency, but not allow application to fellowship programmes. Which are the programmes in the 11 states allowing one to enter US residency programme to take step 3 on arrival, and thereby obtain H1B? regards d

After fellowship, you would need to find an employer that will sponsor your green card. Not that hard to do - although the location sometimes could be better. As for taking step 3 for an H1b visa, use an internet search engine to find the answer to this. Good luck with your H1b visa.

hi daniell, u can apply to step-3 via www.fsmb.org and apply via connecticut state board, it is easy and fast and u fill the eligibility criteria as per requirements. Am not sure about converting J1 to greencard directly though,i thought the process was J1- J1 waiver position on H1b--and green card. bbbmight be able to shed more light into it.
