is there a certain relationship between Kawasaki and carpet shampoos?? i was taught that i have to ask parents of the children with Kawasaki disease, whether they had washed their carpets in recent time..usually negative answer..

Don't think so, I havent heard of such a thing but you might wanna check a textbook or journal.

Kawasaki Disease and Carpet Cleaners

Despite decades of investigation, the cause of Kawasaki disease remains unknown. For a period of time in the 1980s and early 1990s, an association between exposure to carpet cleaners and KD was suspected and a number of studies were carried out investigating rug shampoo as a possible causative agent. It has been suggested that Kawasaki disease could be caused by hypersensitivity to the detergents present in rug shampoos, or the inhalation of an infectious agent (such as a bacterial toxin or virus) that becomes suspended in the air during the cleaning process. However, the studies conducted have been contradictory.

This association between Kawasaki disease and carpet cleaning was first proposed in 1982 in a paper suggesting that an outbreak of 23 cases of Kawasaki disease in Colorado may have been related to the exposure of children to recently applied rug shampoo. It described that a significantly larger number of children with the disease had been exposed to carpets that had been cleaned within 30 days before the onset of symptoms compared to the number of control children (who do not have the disease, but are used for comparison purposes). Following these initial results, there have been three additional studies that did find an association between exposure to freshly cleaned carpets within 4 hours of the cleaning process, which included methods using steam in addition to chemicals, and there have been four studies that have found no such association. The studies supporting this suspected association found that there was an increased risk of Kawasaki disease with exposure to carpets cleaned in any manner, both with water and with chemicals, as well as to upholstery and other types of furniture that may harbor dust mites that had been spot-cleaned. Therefore, it is likely that the chemicals in rug shampoo are not responsible for the increased risk of Kawasaki disease, if there is such an increase. It has been suggested that exposure to house dust mites disturbed during the cleaning process could be responsible for this association and Kawasaki disease. However, there have also been a number of studies demonstrating that the disease can occur without exposure to dust mites. It is possible that the dust mites carry an infectious agent that causes Kawasaki disease, but such an association has not been determined.

In summary, although there have been a number of studies performed to investigate the association between the exposure to freshly cleaned carpets and Kawasaki disease, no such relationship has been definitely established. In addition, it appears that house dust mites disturbed during the cleaning process do not cause the disease, although it has not been determined whether they may carry infectious agents that are responsible for Kawasaki disease.

Current Research: A Possible Infectious Agent

The focus of research of the cause of Kawasaki disease has shifted from the proposed association with carpet cleaners and dust mites to investigation of potential infectious agents as an underlying cause. There is a great deal of evidence suggesting that Kawasaki disease is caused by an infectious causative agent, possibly leading to disease in genetically susceptible hosts. There are many possible causes currently being investigated. A great deal of attention has been given to the possibility that an infectious agent producing a toxin that is capable of stimulating the inflammation exhibited could cause the disease. However, no such agent has been identified and there have been conflicting experimental results
