I would put graduation year number 1. Then visa status. Then scores. Then LORs. They do count them. Anything else of much less importance. I must not complain. I have 12 interviews so far. But none of them from university program. And I think it is because of graduation year. Otherwise, I have 99/99, US externship and LORs, and GC. If my goal was a fellowship-- I would be devastated. But now I pray for simply matching in a decent program with friendly athmosphere.

bhagat, I graduated in 1992, did the internship in my country and was practicing medicine before I moved to USA. I have 3 months of US externship. I do not have research experience. I used to think that the scores are everything, but it seems that three variables are equally important: a lot of program have a graduation year cut out: you are beyond that year-- they do not look further into your application does not matter what scores you have. The same with visa status. Maybe you are walking genius, but if you need visa they do not support-- does not matter that you graduated yesterday. And then , yes, scores. I have a friend with three attempts on Step1, US experience, GC... NO INTERVIEWS. That is where disaster is: when you are not given any chance. I wish everybody here to be given a chance and to find an option to be happy with.

Hi guys, I honestly feel that visa, publications, phd degree, resarch paper awards, US clinical experience and LOR from a teaching faculty tops the list. Most university programs dont even look at foreign graduate. They take most of the residents from medical students who have rotated with them during undergraduations. I feel that scores and year of graduation are the lowest in importance. I have very good scores. So I am not trying to downgrade some one with good scores. If scores were the main thing, then most of the people in the forum would be geting lots of interviews. If year of graduation is the issue, most of the people in the forum except a few would not be getting any. Most fmg are between 30 and 35 years. Its becoming tough for IMG day by day. I feel that most university programs are out of the reach for most of the imgs. Its time most of us accepted the fact. But I feel its not unfair. If an american graduate goes to our country for a residency, our countrys law will not allow them to do so. For example, the Indian law does not allow a foreigner to write any pg entrance exams. I feel thankful to this country for giving me the chance- even if it is in a community hospital.

Hi guys, Year of graduation does matter.they look for USCE if year of grad is >2-3 years.there r people with recent graduation(2003),no USCE,no US LORs but good scores and they have >15 interviews.according to me the list goes like: 1.scores(they do matter foremost) with certification. 2.year of graduation(best if within last 2 years) 3.visa status(those requiring visa please take step 3 asap) 4.If scores r <95,year of grad is >2 years and/or if applicant needs visa then they look for the extra something in the candidate like USCE,research, publications. and for those who r pretty old grads, say >5 years, then a really worthwhile work experience(in home country or US) and recent great USMLE scores. AND date of sending application does not matter...programs want to get the best possible future residents as soon as they can spot them... wat do u'all think?
