Skin Poppers are drug abusers
Secondary (AA) amyloidosis has increased in frequency as a cause of renal disease in chronic parenteral drug users, particularly among those who inject drugs subcutaneously ('skin poppers').
Chronic suppurative skin infection consequent to repeated subcutaneous injection appears to be the underlying cause.
Also,Prolonged survival of heroin abusers and exhaustion of intravenous access requiring recourse to the subcutaneous route underlie the occurrence of amyloidosis in the addict population.
