Hi ,
Im new to this forum ..... ive read some of ur posts so asking for help
I have cleared step 1 gave csa waiting for result but unfortunately failed step 2 with 73 & have already applied to 50 int.med programs so what I would like to know is can I give my step 2 by march or what date to be eligible for 2004 postmatch or is it all over for me for this years match

thanks in advance any help is appreciated

If you have your ECFMG certification by the end of March, you might be lucky to get a spot in the post-match scramble. But if you won't have it - then study your "tuchus" off, and reapply for the 2005 year.

I know, not the answer that you want - but when a PD hires someone for post match, they want someone who is ready to apply for their license, etc.

Good luck

Hi

Iam an IMG .I have cleared my step1 exam and will be giving csa and step2 in Jan and 15th feb,2004. Do I have any chance of getting residency in post match.

How to apply for postmatch?
Do I need to apply anywhere like NRMP , ERAS, ......?

If yes then when to apply?
I haven't applied anywhere till now. Please give your valuable advice
Thanks

I have the same question as well, but I will be taking my step II in mid feb. About 21 days away from the post-match day, Will I be ready to start calling unfilled program on march 16.

Post match means that you wait for the results to be posted on the NRMP web site, find out where there are open positions and have your materials ready to fax.

There is no where to register, etc.

Good luck

I am hoping to take part in the post match too.
Pls what is the role of ERAS and NRMP in the post match if any, since one does not need to register to participate in the post match?

The NRMP will post a list of post match positions for persons to start contacting programs during the scramble.

ERAS is not involved.

actually its couple of hours process on March 16th, what documents/letters should I be ready to send by fax. Is it really necessary to have ECFMG Certified by March 16th, I think by the beginning of program (which is in june/july 2004) we should be ECFMG certified. I am a green card holder and I cleared step1, CSA already...taking step2 on March1st so I might get my results by March 20-25th AM I eligible for post match...what are the chances of getting a program...Appreciate your help..

In many states you need to get an educational license. Without the ECFMG certification you will not be able to get the license. Again, check with the licensing board for the states that you are interested in.

A program may not want to chance a position on a person who is not "drop down" ready to submit paperwork for licensing, visa (if necessary).

Good luck

Medical Licensure
The individual states and territories of the United States have the responsibility of issuing medical licenses, legal permission to practice medicine, to those physicians who practice within their jurisdictions. All physicians must have a valid medical license to actively participate in any form of patient care.

Since licensure requirements differ considerably from one state to another, it is important for international medical graduates contemplating entry into any GME program to ascertain the specific requirements of the state in which the program is offered. They should be certain that all state licensure requirements can be met within the time necessary to permit entry into and progression through the GME program under consideration. Training programs are often good sources of information about the licensure requirements in the state where they are located.

All states require that applicants take and pass USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3 to obtain a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine. Most states require the completion of, or near completion of, at least one year of accredited GME training before taking Step 3. In addition, all states require some GME training before a full unrestricted medical license will be issued, although the requirements vary considerably among the states. Most states require a limited training license which allows a physician to practice in a supervised training setting but not to practice in an unsupervised setting. Some states may also require that residents in a GME program obtain an unrestricted license at some point in their training in order to continue in their training programs.

http://www.ecfmg.org/gme/begrsrq.html

Requirements to Begin Residency Training
In order for international medical graduates to actually begin their residency training in an ACGME accredited residency program to which they have gained acceptance, there are two basic requirements which must be met by the start date of the residency.

First, individuals must hold a valid ECFMG Certificate. This means that they must have met all ECFMG examination requirements, be graduates of a medical school listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) World Directory of Medical Schools, and satisfy all of the ECFMG medical education credential requirements, including verification of credentials with the applicant's medical school. Note that even though positions outside the NRMP Match may be offered to and accepted by individuals who have not yet submitted their final diploma or passed all ECFMG examination requirements, they still need to take and pass all such examinations, including CSA, before they can receive final ECFMG Certification (unless they met all requirements for ECFMG certification by June 30, 1999) and begin an ACGME accredited residency program.

It should also be noted that unless and until an individual enters an ACGME accredited residency or clinical fellowship position, there are requirements to maintain the validity of the basic ECFMG certificate. Two of the exam dates on the Standard ECFMG Certificate are subject to expiration for the purpose of entering graduate medical education programs. The English test date is valid for two years from the most recent date of passing performance. The Clinical Skills Assessment date is valid for three years from the most recent date of passing performance.

If the English test date on your Standard ECFMG Certificate has expired, you must take TOEFL and achieve a score acceptable to ECFMG before you can enter a program of graduate medical education. If the CSA date on your Standard ECFMG Certificate has expired, you must pass another CSA before you can enter a program of graduate medical education. Once you meet these exam requirements, ECFMG will mail your revalidation sticker for the appropriate exam. You must attach the revalidation sticker to your Standard ECFMG Certificate, following the instructions that accompany the sticker. Each revalidation sticker is unique and includes the same Identification Number that is on your Standard ECFMG Certificate.

Once an international medical graduate enters an ACGME accredited residency or clinical fellowship, their ECFMG certification becomes permanent and no further verification of English language proficiency or clinical skills is required. Second, they must possess legal status within the United States that allows participation in graduate medical education, e.g., J-1, H-1B, permanent resident status (green card) or other legally permissible visa option.

Check the ECFMG web site and the ERAS web site. They should have all the information that you need!

Good luck

Hi BBB,

You mentioned about an educational license before residency training. Is it something like a California letter for CA programs? What other states (as you know of) also require such letter/educational license?

I just knew I would be too late to get a CA letter for Y2005 match, and want to know if need to prepare for other state now.

Thanks for your help!![/quote]
