Parvo virus B 19 virus infection in otherwise healthy host is almost certainly an immune complex disorder that is manifested as self limiting erythema infectiosum&/or arthropathy.Whereas in a compromised host(with chronic hemolytic disease/ immunodeficiency syndromes)it causes severe anemia due to destruction of erythroid precursors.

Compared to adults the fetus require higher level of RBC producton and has immature immune system.therefore it is unable to clear the virus effectively that ultimately leads to erythroid aplasia and anemia manifested as fetal hydrops and finally fetal death.
