Suppurativre otitis media occurs as a result of pneumococci, beta hemolytic streptococci, and gram negative bacteria. In children under age 6 the most common cause is Hemophilus influenza, and in children over age 6, it is usually cause by staphylococci. Medical treatment of acute otitis media with effusion must be aimed at the causative organism(s). Commonly used antibacterials are amoxycillin, amoxycillin-clavulanate, ampicillin, co-trimoxazole, erythromycin, and first or second generation cephalosporins such as cephalexin, cefadroxil and cefaclor.
