Hello BBB. I have a problem & would like your advice. I am an img ,currently based in California, looking for H1 visa. I have good scores( 99 each step;step 3 taken last week) with an M.D Pediatrics from home-country but still, understandably, I have got interview calls from midwest & eastcoast only(barring one from L.A). My problem is that I am pregnant ( into my fourth month). So my duedate is in the second half of April. My husband can't join me if I move out of my current place b'coz of his visa issues. I now feel that it would be difficult for me to manage a baby alone alongside the residency. I was thinking that may be it is possible to join some programs in January ('07 in my case). If it is,can you tell me how to go about it? I mean do I ask the few programs that I'm interviewing at about this option? And supposedly, if I am offered a prematch but am not yet sure whether I would like to sign it ( considering I might get a place nearer to my current city), is it o.k to tell the programs that I would rank them high in the match but won't be able to sign the prematch? I mean, I don't want to sign a prematch anywhere in order to keep all my options open. Do you think that would be a wise step? Also, should I tell the programs that I'm expecting as I have heard that many interviewers don't like/ prefer expectant candidates? I know I have asked loads of question but currently am in a state of depression as to what I should do. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, Seriously if i were u, i would have taken a break for a year and gone for '07 match. As u have asked about joining in Jan, it is going to be difficult for u to adjust to that environment in middle of semester....needless to say difficult for the fellow residents and attendings to cope with ur disorientation. I am sure its not wise in your case to move out of the city and about signing the prematch, noone will wait for anyone in this match process( do u think they will go by their word even if they said they will rank u high) and after u refuse to sign prematch again it is a possible that the program may not rank u. And yes it is true that many places dont like expecting candidates. The best thing, according to me, is to take a break from this match find out some good research expereince etc to update ur resume or any good observership since u r right now in ur early months and then go for 07 match. Finally its ur call, and please dont misunderstand i just thought to tell u truely, no harsh feelings. it is better to tell truely rather than giving false hopes. Good luck to u

Dear IMG 2, Don't worry, everything will work itself out. You are not the first person to have a young baby in internship. It can be done. The more time you take putting things off the harder it will be. My advice to you is to go ahead and interview. I had two friends from medical school who interviewed and were LARGE with child. They still matched at their top choice programs. You have performed great on the boards and you have overcome so many hurdles to get to were you are now. From personal experience, I took 6 weeks off on maternity leave, my husband although living with me is never around (he is a surgery resident). It makes no difference whether he is here or not. The ultimate responsibility of taking care of your baby will be yours. I'm not saying it is easy, but if I can do it. So can you. I drop my baby off in daycare in the morning and pick up after work. One of my friends also had a newborn during first year and she hired two nannies, one for the day and one for the evening. You might also consider having a live-in au pair. There is a great web-site called great au pairs. I'm not sure of the address, but you can google it. Bottom line, continue ahead with your plans! best wishes!

i completely agree with Mia's advice...my sentiments exactly!go ahead with the interviews img 2...take one step at a time.u'll have ample time from when the match is announced in march till july(when u start residency) to figure out baby care.don't postpone till 07. g luk

u'll definitely have to arrange for a live-in maid for the 24 hr oncall days.there r lots of websites to help u locate a suitable one.do check out www.greataupair.com i'll need to do the same as I have a one year old and i'll also probably match somewhere away from where i currently live with hubby.but i'm not stressing out abt that right now.it shud inshallah settle with time...i have enuff things to worry abt at hand with the upcoming interviews...
