A 65-year-old woman presents to the hospital with chest pain. She fell and injured her right hip 3 days ago and has been immobilized because of right hip pain. Yesterday she noticed new pain and swelling of her right leg. She has been previously healthy. Her only medications include hormone replacement therapy with a combination estrogen/progesterone preparation.
Which of the following was not a primary factor predisposing this patient to her current problem?

Immobilization as a result of hip injury
Age
Estrogen therapy
Traumatic hip injury

Answer: B
Explanation: The traumatic hip injury and subsequent immobilization likely caused the venous thrombosis that occurred in this patient. Estrogen therapy may have also contributed to development of venous thrombosis. Although elderly patients are more likely to be sick and immobilized, age itself is not a significant risk factor.
