A 4 year old Sudanese boy developed sore throat & fever, treated with Co-trimoxazoe & trimethoprim. Now presents with leathergy, palor fever, splenomegali and anemia, what could be the cause?

a)Sickle cell anemia

b) hypoplastic anemia

c) G6 PD deficiency

d) Auto immune hemolytic anemia

e) Leukemia

drkpp: why do you think itīs A and itīs not C ???

i just want to learn more. I would probably choose C. So tell me whatīs my mistake in this case.

Thanks a lot.

I thought it's G6PD deficiency but i was confused because I found that sulfonamides alone or in combination with trimethoprim can be a cause of anemia in G6PD deficient patients. But as this boy has taken trimethoprim & trimoxazole.

But sickle cell anemia is precipitated by the conditions which cause sickling of cells e.g fever, dehydration, acidosis, hypoxia but i've never read about any drugs causing sickling.

Any further comments welcome.

i think it is A because there is splenomegaly
