"Mrs. Cole, kids with bedwetting usually undergo natural healing with age, but this problem needs tenderness. Punishing your child could worsen it - a much better technique would be to rather reinforce positive behaviour by praising and rewarding him if he stays dry while sleeping. We also need to do some tests to rule out other conditions."

Very good question, thanks for making me to look it up! What to ask: Since the main DD is between primary and secondary enuresis ask if the child was dry at night before, how many episodes per night or day, about the urine volume, about how much the child drinks every day. Also about the presence of any urinary symptoms: pain, burning, incomplete emtying of the bladder etc. Other possible diagnoses may be onset of diabetes (ask about pertinent symptoms), a neurologic problem (ask about neurologic/gait abnormalities). Emotional issues like birth of a sibling or family problems may result in enuresis. Also, since primary enuresis has a strong genetic component ask if mother/father had the same problem. Counseling: Emphasize that bedwetting is a common problem especially in male children. For older child emphasize that the mother has to be very careful and supportive because the child may loose self-confidence and avoid certain social situations. Also tell the mother to monitor child's drinking habits before going to bed and encourage the child to go to bathroom before he/she goes to bed. All the best with your exam.
