Took CS in chicago on October 24th. The exam itself was easy but time management is the key. First as soon as you see the doorway information make a list of the DD. Sometime during the encounter the SP will surely ask you a prognosis question. Something like- will i get better or Will i need surgery or Is everything alright. For all these Q the standard answer would be- At this point I cannot tell you for sure but let us not jump into conclusions. I need to first finsh the physical and then order some diagnostic tests after which i can tell you what exactly is wrong. Another common happening is black out. You suddenly seem to run out of questions. At this point act as if you are taking notes and recollect the questions to ask. If nothing comes to mind move on. You can ask questions later while examining the patients too!! While writing the patient note, write as if you have done everything even if you forgot something. The doctor who corrects your note has no idea if you performed everything. And as most cases have no finding, you can go ahead. I had only one finding, an enlarged tonsil in a case of pharyngitis. Finally the DD and Inv carry a lot of points. Make sure you do them well. I think most people who do badly on this exam is because they neglect this part, which a doctor correcting the patient note will surely see. As long as you keep talking to the patient throughout the encounter you should be fine. Make sure to use a lot of please, thank you and sorrys.
