Please help...........anyone to everyone In the next few days I have to decide in which degree I should pursue my career and get a Residency. Well you all know that I am preparing for CK and will take the exam in the last week of November... I decided to enter a Masters program in the US before applying for residency...............I hope it will help me in enhancing my credential. Actually I don't have a Research experience at present. Also my Undergraduate credential are just OK............................................................ I was struggling for the past two years to get into a masters degree. Now at present I am confuse between two universities in which I got accepted. .......... Going into a wrong University and Degree can ruin my career and would waste my parents hard earned money. 1) Georgetown University... General Master of science in Microbiology and Immunology 30 credit The department offers a flexible program of study designed to help students achieve their individual educational goals and career objectives. A broad range of course offerings from within department and University allow the student to gain or enhance their background in microbiology, immunology, and various aspects of modern molecular genetics. Laboratory experience in specialized techniques is also available. The program is intended to enhance career advancement in teaching and industry or prepare a student for a career in research. One and Half Year Program................................................................ .... ................... 2) George Washington University----------------- 45 credit Program M.S. Program in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases The goals of the M.S. Program in Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases are to ensure that graduates: • Understand the biological complexities of microbial pathogens and the diseases they cause• Recognize the major epidemiologic and clinical features of microbial diseases• Understand how new biotechnologies (including genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics) can be applied to the study of microbial pathogens• Develop an in-depth understanding of epidemiologic principles and practice • Apply the principles of epidemiology and public health practice towards the detection, surveillance, investigation, and control of microbial diseases. These goals will be ensured by 40-41 credit hours of coursework, 1-2 credit hours of laboratory research, and 3 credit hours of independent research practicum, which will provide the student with a culminating experience. Two years program For me both degree looks fine........................... I dont know which university is better Georgetown or George Washington.I also dont know which degree is better for improving my credential.. Also If you can please answer the following 1. I have decided to apply for 2007 match then when should I apply to ERAS..... 2. For 2007 match when does the interview take place....( 2006 or 2007). I mean the interview is before the match or after the match................................. Please write back....................................................................... .................. Your help would be greatly appreciated If anyone is opting for a master and wants some info in getting admission...I would be happy to answer their queries....... Sincerely ARJ

1. When ever ERAS opens for 2007, which should be available in August 2006 2. Interviews (for the majority of the programs) take place between November and February. Good luck!

for 2007 match make sure your application is ready by the sep. i.e step1,2ck,cs and 3(if h1 needed). this will make u a strong candidate for a prematch..... about the masters- sorry have never really gone into the details....

u see, thats one way ppl prefer coming to u.s rather then goin for visitors visa. there is more likelyhood that u get a students visa then there is that u get a b1/b2, even if its just for cs and interviews. so lots of docs. get into a masters programme and in the meantime settle for h1..

Hi ARJ well in your case..i see the following possibilities...but they all depend from univ to univ...for example... some univ let u rush your course in less time...but then ask u to fill tution fees for next quarter.....but u dont need to go coz u already done with your units...however u get the graduate degree only at the fixed time! or few univ....are very adamant about the course schedules. also in other univ....which i believe is true for most US univ....after certain fixed quarters...which are usually the first 3-4....each univ has a program of distant learning...where u can complete the course online ...means u can do it even after u join ur residency. so best for u would be to find out details from your specific univ. Hope this much info could be of any help to u!! Also...i needed to ask one thing....coz my univ doesnt hv much on research side....i was thinking of getting some US clinical experience by workign smwhere...even on voluntary basis.....i mean without expecting any salary or anyhting. But i hv tried few places....and all say...we cannot let u coz of confidentiality issues of our patients and blah blah! I WAS WONDERING THAT....THEN HOW ON EARTH PEOPLE GET TO GAIN SOME EXP IN US ??? plz advice if u can! thanx

Thanks drzoyakapoor...........Your advice would be very helpful......... Regarding your query.....I did some research before applying to the different masters degree...I found out that most of the IMGs are accepted over east coast (New york, New Jersey, nearby states).......Personaly I would like to tell you that west coast is not IMG friendly.....I was also accepted in UCLA but I rejected the admission only because of the above reason..... I have one of my senior said that rounds in Newyork city ( I dont know which Hospital) are taken in Hindi....................May be joking I think the people who gets US clinical experi are in the eastern coast...... Many of my seniors also got accepted over the eastern coast without any research........ Main problem is that of VISA....................................................................... ......... Can someone over the forum share their opinion????????????????????????????????
