Hi SSRPK,

Well to be frank it depends on the program you get in.I had a talk with the program director of a very reputed institute(MGH) and he said that he does not prefer IMGS in categorical programs. He did take a saddistic pleasure in telling me that they do not take prelim after 1 year. The brighter side of the story is that this does not happen in all the hospitals.only hospitals with the AMG friendly hospital tag and malignant interviewing do this. The other bright part is that you gain 1 year clinical experience that will catapult your chances of getting into a great categorical program next year. This is my opinion from my expereince.People may differ.

You can get categorical after prelim, make sure where you apply to prelim there are img's in the categorical positions in second yr, because there are some places i think mayo is one, where they may give you prelim, but will not offer you a categorical postion at their instition for second year. Therefore they contacts you make during prelim may not help. Dont quote me on mayo, thats what i heard. prelim surg can be dangerous, there is no doubt about it.

so the bottom line is, getting prelim surgery does help you get a categorical the following yr, however you will have to start all over again and it may not be the same hospital.. hmmm!

you dont start all over again, you try to get into a pgy2 spot. the pgy2 spot is not easy to get.

Just a quicky....Is it worth it the try to go for resaerch rather than doing a year of prelim, in view to secure a categorical in a good Univer hosp programe?

Regards

Sofianee,

I have friends that have opted to do that....research vs. prelim year. Itīs really up to you what you want to spend that extra year doing....working or researching. Bottom line is as an IMG, itīs really up to the Surgery gods to smile down upon you in order to get a categorical position. Of course, the more experience you acquire along the way helps, but beware, very few surgery programs will want to take a 30 something or a 40 year old surgery intern. Use your time wisely.

Sometimes no matter what you do seems to get you a categorical spot. Sad, but true.

Thanks for your message, the thing is accepting a prelim year and ending up in a catastrophic situation afterwards is not the right path....you knowI mean!!!

I am 30 (was 30 on the 21/06) and I believe I still have time to built up a goold career but not at the price of obstructing my corronary as I am awaiting for an aceptance to a residency spot...

Live is tough and I belive is tougher for us (IMGs)

take the prelim if you get it, its a good way to see how the field truly is, whether you like it or not. If you find that it is not for you, you can reneter the match again fro 2007 in some other field. Thats just my opinion, if you do you like it work hard and see what happens, thats pretty much all you can do I think. good luck to all.

Hai guys,

I feel honestly that most of the img give too much importance to the scores. I have very good scores-98/99. I am an img in the same boat with you. I am working as an extern i a hospital that is now conducting interview for residency. I am getting a chance to see and overhear many things. You should know that i am talking about my experience and not trying to downgrade anyone with very high scores. Most programs have a cut off for their interview selection for fmg only. They are usually of the ordeer 215/85. Whatever score you have above that will not help you much. So once you have have the cut off score, assess yourself without the score- visa, communication skills, year of graduation, US clinical experience in a hospital that has residency in your field, LOR from a teaching faculty in your field of interest, gold medals, awards, journal publications, conference presentations, research paper awards, research experience, PhD degree and such stuffs. These are the only ways you can stand up in front of US graduates and not by the scores. If you think this way, you may be able to predict the number of interviews you are likely to get and the chance of you getting in a prestigeous program. This is a lesson that I learned from my short experience in US. I dont want to hurt or offend anyone. This is my view regarding what is going on. Just imagine that this is a 100m race and that local graduates get to start 75 meters in front of us. I agree that most of you people may be more experienced than me and havea better idea about things. But Ihonestly beleive that we have to decreases the importance that we give to scores for assessing our chances. Hope I dont offend anyone with very high scores.

i think you arenīt offending anybody. Very interesting and useful info, in fact. Thanks for sharing it. I think that is a good comparison (of the 100 m race.)

Question for you guys:
Is is still possible to receive some other invitations at this point? I did receive 6 so far, not too many, but a couple in very good places. So I am happy with my situation, even if I would prefer 10 interview invitations as a "cut-off" point for "happiness".
What's PISSING ME OFF like crazy is that there are a lot of programs out there, almost AN HALF, that didn't even have the courtesy to send a simple email to tell me that they won't invite me. I guess that it is too late now to receive "anything", either invitation or rejection. And I am not going to be the one begging information to these "ghost programs".
What do you think guys, what is your opinion/experience?
You know, I understand that coordinators are very busy people now and I understand they have many many things to do. But it doesn't take too much time to send ONE email to all the rejected candidates in ONE TIME! It's only ONE email in ONE mailing list. How long could it take?! What trouble could give to a program coordinator?! Besides, isn't that a coordinator task as well?
These applications costed us money (quite a lot) and costed us stress and struggle and worries (an awful lot!), wondering about our future. Doesn't that deserve any consideration at all?
What the hell is wrong with this people?!
I am sorry with this little "outburst" guys, I really needed to speak out this bad feeling, I know you can understand me completely.
I wish the best of luck to all of you and I hope you all got the best program possible.
Hear from you soon, I am waiting for your opinions.
