Dear All, I think it would be a nice idea to post here the denialsand interviews from various hospitals. That gives us all a fair idea as to which program has started sending out denials/interviews.What do you say?

i agree americadotcom. Because you know there is another topic about rejections and interviews with scores and all that, but itīs for all the specialities and they have different criteria. It would be more useful to have this post for only SURGERY. I agree. Letīs start . What about you? any rejection or interviews?

do any of you guys need a visa? do you guys have usce in surgery? your scores are great, well above the cutoff for cat surg. it must be something else.... i have called a few programs, just to get a heads up, they look at the whole application, not just scores it seems surgery is getting more competitive. maybe because of the 80hr rule. tell you the truth it isnt looking good for us surgery hopefulls. has anybody got interviews for categorical surg please share with us i know you are out there? well the best of luck for you guys for 2006 match. ill be going through it next yr. apply for prelim as well asap if you still can. try to transfer to a pgy 2 afterwards. Maybe the interviews will come next month. GOOD LUCK.

i donīt have neither USCE, nor green card or residency. I need a visa. Which would be the cutoff (scores) to get a preliminary and which to get a categorical position???? approximately, of course.

General Surgery used to be possible for foreign grads to match into. But things are changing for several reasons: 1.) lure of plastic surgery after general surgery, 2.) 80 hr work week, 3.) big demand in the US. I know a general surgery resident from Pakistan who matched at a program in General surgery 2 years ago. He had a 255 on step 1, and a 260 on step 2. And he matched into an ok academic program. He said last years class took no foreign grads at his place, because now people from the US with very solid grades are applying to general surgery in strong demand. Here is the problem. US grads can get scores like 190 or 200 on step I and can match into General surgery without a problem. but if u are a foreign grad, expect to score atleast a 98-99 on both step 1 and step 2 to EVEN be considered for an interview. Residencies that you have almost no shot at applying to: orthopaedic surgery, radiology, plastic surgery.

yeah, i think vaness is an US grad. That explains her answer but she has reason in that is competitive but itīs possible, many IMGs do it every year. And many IMGs are outstanding, as many US grad, like everything.

i dont know if you need a 99 to get an interview from the programs i talked to. They look at the whole application. once you make the cut off, they look at other stuff.

i came across a website lately which states that most of the competitive fields require atleast 3 LOR's..... and has listed the name of some IMG friendly hospital for different programs. www.usmleweb.com i wonder if they require the LOR in the same respctive fields!

Hey guys! Good to finally have a post on Surgery. I've applied to abt 40 programs - mainly categorical. 6 rejections so far - no interviews. Rejections: York, Brooklyn, Albert Einstein (Penn), Pinnacle (Penn), Wayne State (detroit) and SUNY stony Brook. My credentials are 99/99 (both 263)/CS passed/No USCE or USLORs/Need visa. What do u guys think abt the chances of categorical after a prelim year. I've heard that they aren't always great.

wow docvivek, you have great credentials, when did you graduate??, or why havenīt you gotten many interviews? Hey, we have similar rejections . I have 7 rejections (Brooklyn, York, Nebraska, Wayne, Pinnacle, Union, Providence St John) until now. And I have a non clear message from Guthrie, itīs like a hold application or something like that. What do you think guys about Guthrie in PA?

I didnīt clarify. No interviews until now. The only thing i know is that we (IMGs) can do it and usually have to do it because they offer us a preliminary position, only. I think itīs possible, it seems to be that itīs usually our path or way to get a categorical position. So, 1+5= 6 years at least.
