I know someone who was rejected after he sent in his application......while that is fine.....what is disturbing is that in the rejection mail the PD clearly mentioned that 'We do not consider IMGs and their application is screened and removed hence the rejection'.I wanted to ask you, can this be considered as discrimination as clearly its mentioned that the reason for rejection is not becoz he didn;t fit the criteria or due to overwhelming response etc.... but just at the fact the applicant was an IMG????I consider this as discrimination, don't u think so?If yes, what action can we take to protect our rights? Is there any body we can complain to?If you're uncomfortable responding to this post you can send me PM as well.Waiting for your reply.

Well, if he's rejected because he's an IMG and the faculty doesn't have any IMG's, then there really isn't a basis for discrimination. If they have IMG's, but don't sponsor visas, and they have no IMGs on visas, again, the same thing.

Geeesh - you would think that they could be a little more politically correct in their answer, eh?

Who can you complain to? I really don't know - ECFMG, ERAS or AAMC?

I know it hurts and i got similar sounding mail from certain programmes.

If a PD is sending out such an insensitive e-mail then imagine how he must be managing the programme itsefl and he probably insensitive to reidents comments as well.

Better not to work in such a programme.

It tells tons about persons charecter and way of life when he/she writes or speaks.

But personally if they prefer AMGS' i donot think there is any thing wrong in that.

I don't think there is anything wrong that some programs only take AMGs. But would be a lot nicer if they state clearly in their application requirement on the website/brochure so IMGs don't waste their time and money.

I think every IMG knows we will face something like this at some time point. Maybe from PD now, maybe from patients later. As for myself, I wouldn't really care if I ever get a mail like that. I get the training I want and then move on with my life. It doesn't help by being really upset or complaining. Actually I am grateful that this country at least opens doors to IMGs.

Cheer up everyone and good luck. smiling face

I think they have every right to reject a candidate and only keep AMGs.Thats not the issue. The issue is that if he bluntly rejects on the basis that you are IMG(thats all) then its very offending and I feel discriminates. Its like telling someone....sorry we do not accept females in our programs or we do not want dark skin person in our program.

They could have easily said 'Sorry we are not able to grant you interview due to the overwhelming response from competitive candidates'.

I agree with Katzung that it speaks alot of the character of the person who wrote it and the program.I agree with you wombat that we should be grateful for being given this opportunity to train in the U.S. but it should be not be done at the expense of compromising dignity and respect for others.

That PD told the truth although politically incorrect I guess. At least when you get something like that, you know it's not that you are not good enough academically for an interview slot, but rather you are in a category that they don't consider at all. I mean one can always find something positive from things like this.

People understand what it takes for IMGs to start a new career in this country. For my research job, I've been working with many fellows. Because this is a very good fellowship program in the country, the fellows are mostly from top med schools and prestigeous residency programs. But they are also very nice people and down to earth. They always encouraged me to get into residency here and helped me a lot. So people know, just don't get frustrated by few insensitive responses you get.

Good luck everyone!!

I have applied to 63 Pathology spots and I have only recieved 3 rejections & 0 interviews. Step 1 81 Step 2 85 CS pass, American citizen, graduated april 2005, ECFMG certified. I already missed the 2005 match which most of my graduating class participated in. I am really losing all hope.

I just ned for someone to give me an honest opinion is I have a chance. If not I need to scrap Match 2006 and find another way in.

THanks

My friend has step 1 84, step 2 79, CS pass, GC, graduated more than 8 years ago. He got 2 IM interviews, 1 Family medicine interview so far. Try programs in New York.

All I know is that the message was very negative. If they were so honest then they should have just written it on their website....'sorry IMGs won't be invited for interviews irrespective of your qualifications' thats honesty.Assuming you were an employer and you received an application from someone who has poor scores.....will you tell that person 'Sorry you're so stupid with such dumb scores that I won't take you in a hundred years'.....thats honesty too.....but is it the right thing to say?Wil you say it?There is such a thing as PR you know.

Not all IMGs require visas.....some IMGs are citizens or GC holders. And if they can't apply to these programs not because they aren't qualified enough but because they are IMGs......thats discriminating against them isn't it,after all its their own country and they too do deserve an equal chance?

Please don;t get me wrong......ofcourse there many many Americans(who easily outnumber these croonies) who don't label you with the term 'IMG'/or any other label and then shy away from you. But for a country which preaches freedom, democracy, equal opportunity and non-discrimination its embarassing to see this sort of behaviour and that too in the medical profession.......becoz we don't go around labeling our patients with tags like 'Oh, you're Croatian....sorry I can't treat you,I only treat Irish!'.Whats the logic behind that when we label it amongst ourselves?

  #11

What would you do if one day a patient in the ward claims he only wants to be seen by American doctors? rolling eyes

  #12

Thats the patient's decision. It needs to be respected.

But would you respect the American doctor who says I do not treat Indians?

  #13

If we let ourselves get upset over things that we can't control, we won't get anywhere. The program that won't take IMGs isn't getting the best physicians that they can get. They are getting what is left over. I've seen AMGs come through our program that I wouldn't let touch family members that I don't like (:nodsmiling face and I have seen IMGs that I trust my life with (and have on a couple of ER visits). That program looses.

I have seen many AMGs with names that would label them with the IMGs. You can't tell simply from a name anymore. I'm just glad that I have among my friend people with names like Joan, Gury, Rasha, Lina, Ana, Silvia, Ruth, Amy, Kavitha and more. Now, who is an IMG and who is an AMG? Only I know and I don't care.

I agree with you bbb......many people say 'negative' things about IMG friendly programs such as Lincoln,St. Barnabas etc... but if you check their board pass rate these hospitals are the ones with highest board pass rates in the states.I'm sure bbb.....your programs too must be having one of the highest board pass rates in your state becoz you choose the best candidates and not give them a label and select a certain 'brand'!

I agree with you completely that if we let such obstacles take all our attention,we lose focus and can't go anywhere.I'm ready to move on......and move to a program which respects me and accepts me for the person I am! Now all I have to do is track you down to get into such a program!! grin

  #15

all said and done...this is america..they still discriminate among whites and blacks albiet not openly..we r just IMG's..we may b having GC's or Citizenship but the place where we did med. schooling if its not known to TOP tier american program they wont consider us..coz they know abt reputation of med schools in america..I agree its discrimination but its not gonna change overnight...situation might improve in next 20 years or so..I have some good american friends not in medical field though but when I tell them the situation abt IMG's n how tough it is to get into Surgery, Orthopedics etc...some of them told me its discriminatory n we should sue them..i mean a common person still understands but if we start suing programs we will never get residency...I agree with bbb..life is not all about going to top medical school in USA..its abt how u make use of ur training at even an average program...I hope we all get into BBB's program grin

good luck

Obstacles are the things which you see when you take your eyes off your goal.

so keep your focus right and move on. Dont waste your energy on such things.

Although I fully agree that it is not the right thing to do ( because u r not deciding on basis of merit) and also not the right way to do it.

so guys keep searching for the right residency and you will find your goal soon.

all the best to all of us
