Hi BBB and other visa experts I have been reading many of these forums to get the answer I am looking for. But I could not. I am doing Post doctoral fellwoship in J1 research scholar category. I have not applied for a waiver and my dream is to convert this J1 research category to J1 resident. (this is the decision I arrived after reading many forums by you BBB,.... thanks....... The reasons are 1.At present I am not thinking about being a permanent resident here. 2. I want to do fellowship.). My questions are 1.How many months it will take usually for the conversion of J1 research to J1 Resident? (I understood that it takes very long for IN-US conversions for F1 to J1. What about this? Will residency programmes appreciate this?) 2.can it be done from here itself? 3. Can I continue in J1 (with out 2 year HRR) if I get a fellowship in J1? (I remember you told It is not possible. Even then I jsut want to clarify.Sorry) 4.To be on safer side and to apply H1 and J1 positions,I thought I can get some documents like No objection ceritficate from India in my hand (NOT waiver) in oder to furnish when it is asked for to process a H1 visa. Will acquisistion of this particular certificate, cause problems with next J1 resident visa application? Sadly, ECFMG site does not clarify this paricular issue. It will be a great help for me to plan my life. Regards shajo

Unfortunately, ECFMG is the place with all the answers for this question.

If you are on J1 with the 212(e) rule you need to get a waiver. Normally it takes about 6 months. I know a friend who had it done in this time. You should start the waiver process as soon as possible. No objection certificate is one of the steps in obtaining a waiver.

Thanks marathon. I had called ECFMG. They told they can not say anything about H1 visa. He told that there are uncommon example of people converting research visa to resident visa. Though it takes time, it can be made fast if the programme in which you are applying is willing to push papers. So this is what I plan. 1. Study well(it is sad that there is on alternative for this.) 2. prepare the documents for Waiver.(not applying for it. Get all the papers from India.) so that when time comes, it would be easier to get a waiver. 3.Get step 3 done. 4.During interview discuss with the concerned people and decide and act accordingly. But I have a doubt. Please answer me. If I get all the documents required from India will there be any problem with the extension of my J1.(In the beginning itself, indian embassy ask for Passport. Will they stamp anything on it? if that is the case, will my J1 extension be a problem?) Can I get the email ID of that person who got waiver marathon? It would be very helpful for me.

What is the deal for a foreign student graduating from an american medical college? I am almost halfway through my junior year and was wondering if the process is different for foreign students with american degrees. I intend to apply before taking either step 2 or 3 but will complete step 2 before I start my residency hopefully. Am I only eligible for the J1-visa? ANy information would be helpful?
