If you already applied for the California letter but dont have it yet you can do the following (copied from http://www.ecfmg.org/eras/ ) "If you do not have the final letter yet, submit a temporary document that we can scan and transmit. This could be the receipt issued by the Medical Board of California, if you delivered your originals in person, or the "Originals Returned" letter that accompanied your returned originals. Later, when you receive your final Application Status Letter, send a copy to ECFMG with a short note explaining that this is your final letter. This will then become your California Letter in place of the previous one, not in addition to it. Therefore, please list California Letter only once. good luck!

Hi doc! I'd like to say that you should give it a try, but getting a california letter (new name the postgraduate training authorization letter/ PTAL) takes a LLLOOOONNNNGG time, and they suggest you take it more than 6 months before you need it. The initial processing alone takes 90 days...check out the requirements at http://www.medbd.ca.gov Then they will send you a notice of receipt of all the documents you sent and say they are reviewing your credentials. After their CAREFUL review (i.e. it takes a while), they will inform you if there are any defiicencies in your training by their standards. I have an issue with that, you can check out my thread on that topic at this link http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/24763 But dont be discouraged though, if you have applied for a PTAL already, you can send them the notice you received as proof that it is in process already. Most CA hospitals require that you have the PTAL even BEFORE they review your application, but some hospitals are kind enough to interview even it you have just the "notice of receipt". I only have a couple of interviews out of 21 applications sent. So I guess that's as good as it gets Let us know what happens
