hi,even though i'm going to write STEP 1 now,i know about your query.According to the info which i have to convert the visa u have to go in some other country and get it converted from that country e.g. u can go to Canada and get it converted . To the best of my knowledge it's true- bit if u find out there's some other way, do let me know.

I would like to add here that you DO NOT have to go out of the country to switch from an F1 to a H1B or a J1. After completing the neccessary paperwork at your place of residency, you 'status' would be changed from an F1 to an H1 but you still have to get your new visa (H1/J1) 'stamped' on your passport. You can do this at your own convenient time when you get a chnace to visit your country. Most people advise to get it done in your home country rather than Canada or Mexico. Hope it helps..
