Hello everyone,

Nowadays I am too much stressed. I am mentally worried about my future. Actually worried about my bad fluency in English. Although I am a techno guy, like gadgets, have deep interest in every subjects of science but very very bad in languages, scored very badly from the elementary school in all languages including my mother tongue. Actually I thought that what is most important to our life is Knowledge and nothing else. Tsunami, Earthquakes, War, Volcanos etc can destroy or take away our property, life, wealth etc but what remains with us is our skills and Knowledge. Learning language is difficult for me. I dont like it, Seems quite ridiculous???????????????. I studied in an convent school, got my education in English medium medical school, scored 270 in TOEFL, GRE verbal 500 but still I am not confident in speaking fluently. I do not have friends who are native english speakers as I am not able to converse with them effectively. Actuaaly my language centre is permanently depressed. Also American english is different then the other countries. I have good clinical experience but not with english speakers.disapproval I know the purpose of CSA is to test once speaking ability which I am lacking. I will be taking CSA in around March 2006.

Anybody in similar situation???????????????? I dont know how to gain confidence?? anybody can help..........sad Guys and Gals Plz I am in desperate need for some psychic support. Any suggestions please.

Iīm in a similar situation because of the lack of fluency in english. Firstable i have to tell you that you speak english much better than many IMGs that will start their residency in the next year. Itīs not a trouble at all. We have to speak enough english and thatīs it. Weīll learn a lot of english in the first 2-3 months of our PGY1. Thatīs the way i see it. A friend of mine who is doing his residency in the USA and is IMG also told me that the PDs donīt wait you to speak like an american and have an absolute dominion of the language, they know you are IMG and itīs ok. Youīll learn in a couple of months the rest of the language. Thatīs my perspective, only. smiling face .

About the step 2CS, iīll do it in approx 3.5 weeks. Here the problem is even minor, because you direct or guide the conversation and youīll talk only about the things you ask your patient(things that you know more than him because you are the doctor, they are only actors) and youīll practice those cases with a friend or somebody before the test, so donīt worry about it. Maybe others rather than you should worry about it.

the best thing u can do is practice practice practice...english is my first language so I often end up teaching others and I find ppl underestimate themselves...even nurses in India I've found speak pretty good english..but the key is speaking it with everyone you know, doesn't matter what anyone else thinks..nothing beats practicing to perfection

Dear chemamr, thanks for that wonderful advise. It was very nice of you that you have explained every aspects of the use of spoken english in passing CS and in residency. You have lessen my anxiety, now I can more concentrate on CK. Again thank you chemamr.

Dear nisha, I will try my level best to practice practice and practice. Actually I never felt serious about improving my language untill my graduation. I was doing well with my mother tongue and my national language. But once I had decided to do come to US I felt that I should improve my Languages especially English. Actually I know too many languages starting with Gujarati, Hindi, English, Konkani, little bit of marathi and little bit of portuguese. Seems ridiculous??????????? that I was planning to learn French, but then I came to know that american speaks spanish and english. If I am not wrong french is spoken in New orleans and in montreal, canada.. and not in USA my ignorance.. Coming back to the point, Gujarati, Hindi, konkani was required for communicating with my patient. When I was in GMC, where I did my internship, but many people spoke only kannad ( comming from the north karnataka). I felt very bad not able to communicate with them. Because a doctor should atleast be able to communicate effectively with the patient. But I think in US everybody speaks english, thats a major advantage. One language is enough for me to master. Again thanks nisha for your advice........................I will practice to Perfection

God please help me.

hi,ARJ!

you mentioned something about not having any native english speakers around that you can practice with.

i bet you have a lot of internet friends who are native speakers.you can establish instant messenger with webcam and multimedia-some of my friends do it all the time-and that way you can practice your english and improve it a lot(if you have doubts about it).i would help out-but i'm not a native speaker-sorrysmiling face

good luck to you all

ARJ, have you thought to take Test of Spoken English? I was worried about my English pronunciation, too and that's what I did to see how was I doing with my spoken English. It helped a lot, I'm not worried about my English anymore. All the best with your exams.
