Please tell the pros & cons of orotracheal versus nasotracheal intubation. Is there any specific indication for each method ?

but you can't do nasotracheal intubation in head injury or facial trauma because if there is fracture of cribriform plate, and CSF rhinorrhoea, then you've had it... nasotracheal intubation is preferable for those requiring prolonged or elective intubation. its associated with less complications in the long run supposedly, but necrosis of nares can occur. plus its less liable to get dislodged.... since the technique is a bit cumbersome for nasotracheal for those who are not familiar with it, and requires additional expertise and practice, it should be done in emergency situations only by those who are proficient at it. we do nasotracheal intubation for kids undergoin surgery for heart disease who are likely to require prolonged support in the ICU in post-op period....or for chronic Neuro cases, who're likely to be on ventilator for weeks.... hope this helps....

Surgery in the oral cavity is also an indication for nasotracheal intubation.
