Hi, Path guys and gals, I know you are out there. We are a very small community and we need, more than anyone else, to stick together through the Match season. Who wants to start?

  #2

What about you?????????nod (I mean the start)
Applied to 50 programs (the last 20 I sent last weekend)....my emotions about the match are changing between upset, depressed, hopeful, ....

I got one interview (Emory, I know it's a good place), but that's mainly because I am working there in Pathology research since one year....BUT that's the only interview I got so far......
Got rejections from prestigious places like Johns hopkins, Texas southwestern, Duke, musc and Vanderbilt.....

From the rest I havn't heard anything and it drives me CRAZY shaking head!!!!!!
My credentials: Scores 83/82/CS passed, ECFMG certified, 2 LOR's from my home country, 2 US LOR's, 1 year research in Pathology, observership in AP/CP, 3 years of CP residency in my home country.
so.....what about you??????
S.

Hi Sabine, I wanted to send a clear and short message so I skipped my own information. Congratulations to your Emory call, whether "courtesy" call or not, it is an oppurtunity. You will get more soon. smiling face

I have 5 invitations, from UTSW, UC, CWRU, UMass and my local program, out of 49 applications sent out 2 weeks ago. I hope to get more of course. No rejections yet. I have 99/99/ECFMG, 2 USLOR, no USCE, years of research and a few publications, no previous Pathology residency.

I am feeling anxious about the interviews. My first one is in this week.

Hi latitude610,

congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! I am happy for you and I envy you! No wonder, you got great scores there! I'm sure you'll make it!

I PRAY they do not only look at the scores....I am soooooo scared that I won't get any interview calls because of my scores, which in my opinion are not bad at all, BUT they are not stellar!

I wish you the best luck for your interviews, "play the game right'!!!!smiling face

Let me know how the interviews go, lets keep in touch!

GOOD LUCK and congrats again

Sabine

HI Sabine, Thank you. I think your scores are fine, good enough to get you a position. Besides you got experience. Have you applied to many community programs? They are ignored by AMG's and probably easy to get in. And if you don't plan to pursue a research career then they are as good as university programs. Quite a few NYC community programs do NOT participate in the Match. You can still send materials to them through ERAS, but it may be better if you contact them personally.

A piece of information. Danbury hospital of Connecticut is on probation. Be aware and save your 25 bucks.

  #6

rolling eyes 25 bucks down the toilet........just applied to them last weekend!

Thanks for the advice though....I applied to some Community hospitals , there are not too many out there...most of the Pathology programs are University based or affiliated.

Where is your first interview?

Sabine

  #7

It's my local program. I'll let you know after the interview.

i was a pth fan, but after so many rejections, i changed to FP or IM, good luck guys,

  #11

confused hi path guys, have u all already secured ur residencies?where r u all gone?i really need some help.does anyone know,if i stand some chance of matching in postmatch scramble.if i dont match this yr,i am going to do a masters in molecular pathology in UK.is that going to help me next yr?plz advice me.

  #12

Hi patho people, i need a little help, trying to find out some strong points about the following programmes..would really appreciate ur feedback... the following programs are

Baylor,Uni of Minnesota,Wayne State, William Beaumont, Baystate Medical Centre/Tufts and Washington University ...

  #13

To zoya,

sorry, I can't help you much with your question...Haven't interviewed at the places you ask for except for Minnesota!
I think it's a good program there but I also know, that they must interview "millions" of applicants, almost everybody I talked to was going there...

To pathdevo...

I would definitely say, that path is NOT easy to get into...it became more competitive within the last couple of years! The scores are important, I guess, especially for us FMG's and with low scores one must bring a lot of other good credentials to make up for that....I myself didn't have stellar scores and my graduation was long ago...I applied to 50 places and got 6 interviews and a lot of rejections....
With no interviews by now....hmmm, difficult to say. Did you call the porgams you've applied to?
I would definitely suggest the scramble!
Why do you want to do a Masters in Molecular Path in UK????? In my opinion to improve your chances it would be better to do something in the US....but that's what I would do...
what about you visa status?????

  #14

to sabine,

thank you ssoo---- much for ur reply.i want to do masters in uk b'se i am a uk resident and my husband is working in uk. i am on visitors visa.i have a daughter and i dont want to leave her back home.so it is going to be difficult for me to stay here.(i know sounds like i am rationalising but i have tried it in past and is too difficult)i am at home for nearly 3 yrs now.want to do some progress desparately and i dont want to do anything other than patho.i hope some research while doing masters will help me next yr.if u have any suggesstions plz do so,i will be very happy.

thank you

Hello pathdevo,

now if am confused.....if your family is in the UK why do you apply for a residency in the US?????
Are you planning on relocating to the States soon? Why don't you apply for a residency in the UK??

I think, research will definitely help a little bit. Try to get good LOR's from VIP's in Pathology! I think that helps a lot! I had a very good letter from a chairman (woman) for the CP Department at Emory university in Atlanta...I am doing research for her since more than a year now....
I think that helped me a lot as my scores were not stellar....graduation was 1999....
but I also had 3 years of CP residency experience from my home country.....

I keep my fingers crossed for you....I would not want to do anyhting else than Patho either...

GOOD LUCK and merry Christmas for you and your family
Sabine

dear sabine happy new yr to you, thank u for ur last reply.i was on a holiday.yes u r correct in saying that we r trying to move to us,as we dont want to settle down in uk.i am not sure if it will be too much to ask u exactly how should we try for research in path.i am also not sure if i can do research on visitors visa.i am happy to volunteer.if u can suggest me few places where i should try it will be highly appreciated.

thank you

Hello pathdevo,

happy new year to you too....hope you had nice holidays.

Now to your questions: I am not sure if you can work in the US on a visitor visa, even if you volunteer....go to an immigration page online (you might be able to find information there)....when I came here (I got married to a US citizen) I had a visa which enabled me to go to work after I had received my EAD (employment authorization document)....this EAD was necessary and it was the first thing they asked them for when I started working here at Emory.
In general (and this answer is for fredsua20 too) , I mean after you are allowed to work here, I don't think it is very hard to find a position in research.
The best thing is always if you know somebody here who already works in the field and knows people....or go to University homepages online, look for research doctors, write them an email and give your resume to their secretary....

Hope that helps, good luck
Sabine

Sabine since you are so helpful to everyone, could you also answer my questions too? I have finished my step 1, and will do step 2 in may and cs in june. I want to match in 2007. I n the meantime I have a masters in mcro and genetics and 3 yrs work exp in a university. From summer this year, what would be my best way to ensure getting into a path program next year. Thanks and good luck to you for match this year.

amygdalaa,

your work experience and the masters will definitely help! What about LOR's?
Important also: how may years since graduation, USMLE scores (guess, that's the first thing they look at) AND visa status!!!!!, your timeline for the exams is good, I did my CS in April last year and had my results in June....
Pathology seems to be very competitive (more than I thought)....and many programs are small!
Good luck for you!
Thanks,
Sabine
