Hi. I study with usmleworld and it suggests that the anterior lung examination must be with the patient lying down and the posterior examination with the patient sitting up. That is for expose the minimun of the patient body (draping techniques), but that means that we have to examine the posterior lung first and after that the anterior?. Is that correct. :?

Hi Saira, thanks for replying. I think that in a case of abdominal pain is only needed the auscultation of lungs otherwise you donīt have enough time. Saira from where are you from?

Hi! The best way to do it would be with the patient in the sitting position. You just undo the gown and then do both anterior and posterior lung exam. After you are done ,tie the patient's gown up. It's easy and most patients are really cooperative.

Thanks, I have though the same. And what do you think about heart examination, I have though that is best first ask the patient to lean forward (for aortic murmurs) and after that continue the examination with the patient lying down and finally in the left decubitus.

For the heart exam- first check peripheral pulses and then with the patient in sitting position, look for PMI and auscultate the heart. Also get done with the lung exam in this position. Then make the patient lie down-check for JVD and again check for PMI and auscultate the heart. Also check for costochondral and epigastric tenderness in this position.. Ur done!!
