Since being an IMG in USA is a hardly situation for us, being in a totally different (but wonderfull) country, for some of us being away from our parents or friends is not that simple.

for whatever reason we are here (for example i married the most lovely american cityzen in the world; and getting a medical license is a must for me thus I graduated as a medical doctor in my country) we need to mantein ourselves. It is not cheap give those exams, and just keep studing all day and dont earning money and asking my husband for all my "expenses" is something i really hate. I love working and earning my own money = that is the way we latin american people are : hardworking and full of dreams=

Any way. as a graduated doctors we are, we also need to WORK WHILE WE ARE GIVING THOSE EXAMS, I would like to know if somebody like me is working in the field of medicine and health. For example as a Phisician assistants, nurses, research assistants, or some other job as a IMG (MD in our countries) we can do here. It would be nice to post information about how to get those jobs and if anybody has some advice of available positions will be welcome. LETS HELP EACH OTHER.

By the way: information about how to make rotations in hospitals for img is welcome too. I am currently in boston.

It is better to spend as much time as you can studying, if your spouse can afford it.

As an IMG you can't work as a physician assistant or even a nurse. You might be able to find a job as a telemetry technician, pharmacy technician, laboratory technician or nurse aid for $6-8 per hours.

Hi Soho

I'm a mexican IMG, marrried and living in chicago since almost a year now, I'm planning taking step 1 on sep 06'.

Yelenatx it's right a friend of my that it's a medical script (or something like that) works with a doctor and she said to me (when I aske her about a job like assistant) that like a IMG I cannot work like an assistant, nurse or something that involves direct patients relationship because we are qualified to do it like a doctors and wouldn't be etical besides we'll be taking the opportunities to those that are already capacited to work as a medical assistant, nurses, etc. Besides even if you try to work in the areas where yelena suggest 6-8 bucks an hour it's way to cheap !!! instead thinking of that, keep studing and concentrate on passing your boards.

So lie yelena said.. if your wife can afford it keep doing it and think that in the future you are gonna be the one that supports your wife with a better income that the one you guys are having right now.

Keep studing and don't give up... the sooner the better right? wink

Or you can work as a phlebotomist and ekg tecnician, the only thing you have to do is draw blood and do the ekg for the doctors, you don't even have to read it, I am an IMG and I work for 14 dollars per hour in NY as a phlebotomist.

Hey Docs,
In US, each state has their own policy; When you passed the Step 1,2,3 and matched in residency program in US; According to different state policy, need you take some specific state examines again or not? Before you get green card in US, could you still apply for the residency position? If could be, how about the possibilities? Thanks!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I work as a telemetry Tech and the paid it's not bad I read someone wrote 6 to 8 bucks that's not true at all . I worked in california as well ( right now in Phoenix) depends where you work but it's between 10 and 16 Dollars pr hour my check comes to 1100 every 2 weeks so ... and working in research is even better there is good opportunities out there but you have to go and do some research it's always possible .But it's much better not to work and study for the exams I had a hard time to pass my exams I did with low scores now paying the consequences i did not match this year, so i will recommended to everyone taking the exams that study real focus for at least 6 months and take NBME for everyone and if not scoring above 400 please do not take the exam I start studying back in 1999 i did not know anything about it and now a regreat it big time. good luck to everyone
