How do you catch this virus anyway? Human-2-Human? Bird-2-Human? Food(deadbird)-2-Human?

  #7

H and N parts of the virus have many recombinations

Thus if new combination arises we need a new vaccine

The present transmission is from birds to human once infected then human to human

India, France confirm first H5N1 infections

UN renews warning
The United Nations special bird flu coordinator, David Nabarro, says authorities everywhere have to be prepared to deal with an outbreak.

Dr Nabarro says the outbreaks show that agricultural and veterinary services need to be on full alert.

H5N1 kills about half the humans it infects. Since 2003, just over 90 people, all of whom had come into direct contact with the carcasses of infected birds, have died, most of them in China and South-East Asia, but also in Iraq and eastern Turkey.

If the virus mutates into a form that can pass between humans, a global pandemic could ensue which experts have estimated could claim 142 million lives.
