Hi Coolbage, Here is what I know about the two visa good/bad points. Good about H1- no need to go back(to your home country) after completion of residency. can apply for green card and search for a job. Bad about H1- difficult to go into fellowship, I have no idea why its difficult, but I have heard this from many people. Good about J1- easier to go into fellowship( again no idea why!) Bad- may have to go back to your home place as soon as you finish your residency if you do not get a waiver job. experts say that its difficult to get a J1 waiver job, but many people evantually can find one. can not apply for green card.

you will fall into H1B category, which is for expert/proffesional persons. I guess just H1 is for unskilled workers. My advice, click on both

yes, I have clicked on both H1B and J1. personaly I will also prefer H1 but I am also ready to take J1 from a good program because if I am able to get into a good program(maybe a university program) even on J1, getting a fellowship will be easier.
