Why is the term, 'conversion reaction' used for what was known as hysteria? What are the other descriptive terms for this condition? What is the difference between psychosis and neurosis? I gather these terms are obsolete now. Waiting for the replies.

Conversion Disorders is same as hysteria Neurosis is related to anxiety. A psychological or behavioral disorder in which anxiety is the primary characteristic. Psychosis means mental and behavioral disorder causing gross distortion or disorganization of a person's mental capacity, affective response, and capacity to recognize reality, communicate, and relate to others to the degree of interfering with the person's capacity to cope with the ordinary demands of everyday life.

Thank you, thank you both . That helped, though I'm still confused regarding the reason for the use of the word 'conversion'.

Hysteria=pseudoseizures=conversion disorder(reaction), in which the person experiences one or more neurologic symptoms that cannot be explained by any medical or neurologic disorder.

Hysteria The ancient Greek doctor Hippocrates was one of the first to identify this disorder. He noticed that hysteria was common in women and thought it was caused by a displaced uterus. The word hysteria comes from hystera, the Greek word for uterus. The ancient Greek doctor Hippocrates was one of the first to identify this disorder. Conversion The spychological conflict is "converted" into a bodily disturbance. I think that is why it is called "conversion"
