Applying for General Surgery : USMLE 95/92/pass, ECFMG certified, no USCE, 1 y research, fresh out of Medical School. I've already applied to 36 programs , making it a 490$ applications. My feeling is that for FMG it's a waste of money toapply to such a large caliber programs such as : Boston Univ, Mass General, Rush, Cornell, Upenn, even if they provide H1 visa they actually not consider FMF's seriously... What do you think? Regards.

you have a point. but in any case the ONLY way to get into a well known program is to take the first step: sending in an application. but ultimately no one can judge your chances other than the (a) program directors and (b) yourself. and since you cant control/anticipate the program directors reaction 100%, that only leaves (b) good luck!! dh

And another point: Let's suppose you got accepted to Prelim. at Mass. General. You do your best , and after the first year they give you a really strong LOR , BUT...during the Match they still don"t want you as a PGY2.(he has a Yale applicant to this spot). You left with a strong LOR from a Top program , applying to a second tier program. Now imagine the second- tier Program Director , Let's say he has to choose between 2 candidates: 1- you, 2- his own pretty good prelim IMG (he also did his best), whom he knows PERSONALLY. Whom does he choose? What you think? BBB?
