A procedure in which a small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) is injected into a vein, and a scanner is used to make detailed, computerized pictures of areas inside the body where the glucose is used. Because cancer cells often use more glucose than normal cells, the pictures can be used to find cancer cells. It can pinpoint changes in metabolic activity indicative of certain abnormalities. This procedure does not use X rays but measures emissions from radioactive isotope injected into the blood. The nuclear equipment used for the scan produces pictures of the organs in slices or planes. This procedure is primarily used to examine brain and heart function.
