if a person has shingles...is it the reactivation of latent infection with VZV or chicken pox?

VZV can cause"

varicella...which is chicken pox.this resolves within almost 2 weeks. The virus can enter local sensory nerve endings and be transported proximally to sensory ganglion cell bodies leading to a latent infection of the dorsal root ganglion.

stress or immune-compromise would result in viral reactivation and axonal transport of virus from ganglia to nerve endings leading to a recurrent painful vesicular rash over the sensory dermatome....zoster/shingles.

VZV causes chicken pox.....they are not seperate etiologic agents.Hope this helps!
