Plasmodium vivax and ovale both cause relapses....P.Falciparum has no relapsing phase...

The relapse is due to the persistence of dormant forms called hypnozoites in the liver(not all sporozoites divide in the liver cells)...relapses are therefore possible months to years later.Treatment is by suppressing acute symptoms with chloroquine followed by administration of primaquine for P vivax.Povale dormant liver infections...(radical cure).

Just an add on...relapses exacerbations seen due to liver stagesi.e hypnozoites...weeks or even years later.

recrudescence...is a reoccurence of Sx from low levels of organisms remaining in the RBCs.
