do we try to elicit the knee reflex in cases where the patient has an inflammed knee or knee truama? it doesnt seem like you should as it will definitely cause pain. so can we do the normal knee and not the inflammed one if even palpation causes pain?

no, the most important issue with the iflammed knee is to inspect and compare with the contralateral, the appearance, temperature, diameter, Range of Movement. Do the Knee reflex on the healthy knee. Gabriel Ruiz, MD
