Hello, all forum members.
I'm in the middle of application process , but I still don't get all the intricacies of it.
Maybe you can help.
I'm applaying to General Surgery. this is my first choise. Of cource I want categorical, and if I could choose I'd choose Categorical in the less prestigious program over preliminary in the top program. The problem is, how I can regulate this? If I mark both preliminary and categorican in all programs in my application list, I can get a mach in a better program , but preliminary (this is exactly what I don't want) On the other hand, if I mark only categorical - I can be left without a match at all... When residents (programs) decide to which path to accept?
P.S. I'd rather prefer Internal Medicine (my second choice) over preliminary Surgery, so much don't I want to go though this again next year.

Each prelim and categorical program will have different match numbers. If you want to match in categorical surgery, put those first. Then if IM categorical is your second choice, put those programs second on your match list. Then add the prelim surgery spots and then prelim medicine positions.
The match is designed to favor the applicant, so it should work that your programs are in the order that you want.

Thanks a lot, both for the prompt reply and for being here , helping us.
So, as I see in it's only a matter of money- I should pay for both prelim. AND cat. positions in the same program. By the way if I choose categorical only , and the program invites me to the interview, can they still offer me prelim position? Then how will this work out during the match (I don't have this track for this program in the list)? Will I have to add it afterwards?
