Causes of symmetrical IUGR include:
  • idiopathic ,chromosomal abnormalities. TORCH infections ,maternal smoking ,maternal alcohol/opiate abuse ,chronic maternal nutritional deficiency, ionising radiation ,sickle cell disease

Causes of asymmetrical IUGR include:
  • idiopathic ,pre-eclampsia ,maternal renal or cardiac disease ,mutiple gestation

basically symetrical iugr implies problem in the initial phase of pregnancy and asymmetrical means in the later part of prognancy.

also asymm. has better prognosis.

Thanks drkpp

I have read somewhere that in asymmetrical IUGR the head is big and the body is small. How that could be possible. I tried to search but could not find the answerrolling eyes

I think the abdominal girdle is decreased, so the head is relatively big.

How about this,

Mother taking Indomethacin in pregnancy. Hence ther is premature closure of Ductus. The blood goes only to the head shunting through the Foramen Ovale through the aorta. Premature closure of DA will deprive the rest of body with blood supply. Hence the cause.

What do you think about it guys??????????????????????sad

May be wrong?????????????????????sad
