Hi there!
One more question since there seem some people with a lot of knowledge in this forum.
I am planning to apply for a residency programme starting 2007. When would be the best time to do the Step 2 CS ? Is it better to have the result before 1st September? Would that increase my chances? Or doesn't it matter that much and I could also do it later?

Since you are planning for 2007 match, you have lots of time but definitely try to get the score before you apply. Makes your application complete.

Have all your results in and be ECFMG certified by the beginning of September. If you are looking for an H1b visa, make certain that you will have your step 3 results in Sept/Oct 2006.
