Dear all,

I am an IMG, permanent resident of canada, who is participating in this year's match.I so far got 2 interview invitations and had them scheduled for early November. My question now is regarding the visitor's visa from Canada to the US for my interview. 3 monthes ago, when I applied for a visitor's visa(B1/B2) for my CS exam, the counsler said he is not issueing it to me(saying that I was showing strong interests to go to the US and had no ties in Canada.). But after few minutes of dialogue he gave me a one entry visa for 3 monthes. On the visitors visa that I was issued, it was mentioned that I was going to LA to sit an exam(At that time I had my CS scheduled in LA). But later, after I was issued the visa, I had to postpone my exam, and re-scheduled it for a time 2 weeks later than the earlier time and in Chicago rather than in LA. Later on, at the airport when I was about to depart to Chicago, I was denied boarding on the basis that my passport says my exam to be in LA but I was going to Chicago. While I was arguing with the homeland security officials, I missed my flight. My CS exam was only 2 days later in Chicago. After discussing with the homeland security officials, I was on the same day allowed to enter the US but they told me to go to Chicago only via LA( because my visitors visa shows I am going to LA for an exam.) I purchased another ticket to LA and then chicago at the airport by telephone and finally made it to Chicago on time. I stayed only 4 days in the US and then came back to Canada.

Now again, after a couple of weeks, I am gonna apply for a visitors visa to attend my interviews. I now need advice on how to keep the chances of visa denial to a minimum. The reason why the previous counsler hesitated to issue me a B1/B2 visa was because I am single, no kids, no house /properties, too young and I work a non-good paying job. He also asked me why I wanted to write the USMLE and didn't write the mccee(canadian exam). I have now scheduled the mccee for Jan 12/06( I need it for the statment of need in case I ended up with a J 1 visa.).

My specific questions now:

1- Proof of ties:
#### I had an emplyment letter, monthley bank statements, pay statements, tax statements, and a canadian permanent resident card as proof of ties when I last time applied for the B1/B2 visa. I think all of these except the PR card worked against my self by reflecting that I was working a non-proffessional job and have a low income and hence the counsler thought I might abondon canada and stay in the US. I also think presenting all the above documents as proof of ties made the counsler think that I had strong interests to enter the US and stay there(Kinda desperate man with bunch of supporting documents). Shall I this time present only the PR card and bank statement showing that I have adequate funds to support myself during my stay in the US???

2- On the visitors visa application form, there are certain questions that I am not sure how to answer. these are:

  • 2.1-"Do you intend to work in the US??"

I previosly answered "no" to this question. The reason was because I was going to the US to sit an exam, not to work.

Now that I am going for a job(residency) interview, should I answer "yes" to this question?? OR Should I answer "no" because I am at this time going for an interview and not for a work??? If I answer "yes" to this question, I will be expected to answer another question: "provide the name and adress of the place where you intend to work" the answer of which I don't know untill march 15(the day of match). What shall I do with this???

2.2-"How long are you planning to stay in the US??

    #### I answered "about 2 weeks" in my previous appllication and the counsler asked me as to why I am not exactly sure about the duration of my stay. I told him that I will be visiting my relatives( besides taking my exam) and the time I spend with them depends on how buzy they are.

I am not sure how long I will be staying at this time either. I have interviews on November 1 and 2 in NYC but I might get more interviews after I have my the visa interview with the counsler. If I answer as "I don't know how long I will be staying", I am afraid the counsler might get suspicious about it. If I get 5 interviews, I may stay a total of 10 days(because I need time to travel too.). If I get a total of 10 interviews, I will stay 15-20 days. So, how shall I answer this question on the visa application form?? Shall I say "15 days" and tell him I might get more interview invitations if he asks me why I need to stay 15 days for just 2 interviews???

2.3- "Address where you will be staying in the US"

    #### I might be travelling to places whre I don't know I will be travelling at the time of visa interview. For example, I may give an address of a friend in NYC but later, I might get an interview in Texas and need to go there. What do I do with this???

My third question follows below....

3- Do you think the fact that I have been to the US before( for the CS exam) yet I didn't abondon canada will speak to the fact that I am not interested in illegally immigrating to the US??? I am hoping that the counsler would this time have no reason to think I have the intention of staying in the US, because, if I had that intention, I would have done it a month ago when I was there for my CS exam. Does this make any sense???

4- Shall I present a letter from the MCC( medical council of canada) that shows I have a Canadian exam on Jan 12/06 in Canada?? Do you think this will speak for the fact that I will be returning back to Canada??? After all, I paid 1000.00 dollars for this exam!!!

Shall I also print out the interview invitation e mails from the US programs and present them to the counsler???

5-Specific question to IMGS residing in Canada and planning to participate in the US match. Others are well come too

What problems should I antecipate with the visas(be it B1/B2 visa for interview, or J 1 exchange visa or H 1B visa for residency??

$$$$$ Finally, why do the consulate offices think that we may abondon our legal status in Canada and move to the US as illegall immigrants??? I mean, there is no much difference between life in the US and Canada. There surely exists some difference, but no that much, much enough to make one abondon his/her legal status in Canada and seek illegal immigration in the US.

I do highly appreciate any reply to these questions.

Thank you all!!

No clue how to advise you. Check with a specialist in immigration law.

Citizen's of Canada usually don't have a problem as much as naturalized citizens and permanent residents.....

Hey Son 64,

Do you still remember me from Step 2 forum? If you do that's nice because I remember you. Anyway, sorry to hear all this mess you have been going through. I can't be much of a help for you, though when you interview with the officer be honest and short. Make sure he knows that you are coming to interview, not for working. In terms of address and duration of stay...... tell him that in the first week i will go to TX, then the next week will go to NY state, and so forth.....and I need to stay in the US for 3 months....and also say when I travel I will be mostly staying in hotels that programs provided for me ....and tell him you also plan to visit few of your friends as well and give their address. And yes, definetly print out your invitation emails with address of the program on it and have ithem with you. There shouldn't be anything you to worry about much because you are doing everything legally and this is life....people need to travel and go places. I wish i could help you more..... but i don't know much about this visa and all that..... But all the best for you dear. Use your common sence and have a solid plan when you interview with the officer, that would be my advice....and in your residency inetrviews of course. nod Best wishes.........ELM.

Hi Son 64...
I have a kindda same situation..I hold my PR card and would move to Canada in about a year, but am planning to go for residency in US.with this I would endanger my PR status since I wouldn't physically be in Canada for the time needed (3/5 yrs) Don't you have this problem?do you have any idea what could be done?
I was told that canadian residents are given the visa much easier....I think just tell the truth...you have once proven that you have no intention to stay illegally in US....

Regards
