Should i register with ecfmg before starting prep for step 1?
How much time does med school in russia take to send the transcripts to ecfmg ?( mine was saint petersburg state med academy )
I am planning for mid 2006 for step 1

Sending papers to ECFMG will take very long time unless you ask your relatives or friends to visit the rektorat to facilitate the process.

It depends on connections your friends/relatives have in the rektorat. Rektorat can fill out the papers in 1-2 weeks, especially if your relative give them a gift. Rarely rektorat sends papers to ECFMG on its own. Usually relatives take the papers from the rektorat amd mail them to ECFMG by FedEx, otehrwise your papers may get lost. It is better to make friends in the rektorat, because you would need another 4-5 confirmations of your medical diploma until you become an American doctor.

apply as early as possible. pls. keep in touch with yr dean and explain the situation that ECFMG will contact him/her for the multival verifications and will need her signatures and all... mine took forever (4-5 months) till ecfmg finished its verification and gave me a real hard time. even though i used courier service each time, it seemed it took forever to get any paper from russia to the states. from anywhere to moscow, the courier would take only a day, but it would take weeks from moscow to any other towns of russia. mine were sent each time by my dean herself by normal post. yes, u can ask friends there to send with courier service for u too. u should register as ealy as possible with ecfmg to let it commence all the procedure/verification with yr uni. good luck.

Thanks a lot for your advice .I shall apply now and hope for the best .I shall try calling Dean's office couple of times and see how it goes .
I shall be visiting my home country soon and probably would be passing through moscow .Maybe i should stop and go there in person to get it done .I'm not sure .
Let's see how it works .

Seichas gotovlyus step1,ne mog bi kto-nibud iz opitnih sootechestvennikov dat sovet :kogda nujno podavat application na sam exam?Ya - vipusknitsa 2005 goda,nachala gotovitsya paru mesyatsev nazad i poka ne mogu tochno rasschitat skolko vremeni mne ponadobitsya chob bit gotovoi na vse 100%(esli eto voobsche vozmojno)

it usually takes from 5 (genius) to 8 (normal) months to prepare for Step 1
it can tak you less or more, depends on how much effort you put into it
one thing keep in mind
if you want to take exam in 2007 (very realistic) you can register in 2007 pretty much any time before your designated period starts, but if this period will have last month in 2008 you will be able to register only after Aug, 2007
basically, you can register with ECFMG without registering for the test, but i would do it (and i did) as soon as possible so there is time for peperwork to be done, it take some time.

hi guys...i am also russian medical grad..i've completed my grad school from ROSTOV STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY..did anyone from this forum have completed from the same university?i just had exam for step-1 before 2 weeks and waiting for result s ochin bolshoi nadezdoi,potomuchto tolko ona umiraet poslednei actually i m an indian.wish very good luck to you people and i really love to have russian friends and speak poruski s ochin ruskim akzentom.bye and take care yourself.
